Saving the planet, one fabulous garment at a time

I love vintage and thrift shops but I have a hard time finding things that I can wear. I'm shaped kinda funny & nothing seems to fit right. So I alter my clothes & everyone I know admires them. They want to know if I can do that for them, too. I got such requests so often that I decided to screw the man and start my own business. This was while I was attending college, taking pre-nursing courses. After the first year of this craziness I was unsure of my decision but I couldn't stop crafting. Now I'm glad I stuck with it. While taking an environmental health class I did some research about the impact of the fashion industry on the environment. It's horrendous! This confirmed to me that I should stick to reused and sustainable materials. I use what other people throw away and make very little waste. Everything is useful. I'm hoping to show the fashion-conscious that being green doesn't mean dressing in drab.

I compulsively create things, whether it's making sculpture out of dirty dishes in the sink or crocheting on the bus. I use my art to promote reuse and sustainability. It is possible to look fabulous and preserve the environment at the same time.

Come and see the First Thursday Street Gallery from April to October, on the first Thursday of each month. City blocks are closed off in NW Portland on 13th street between Hoyt and Kearney. The event features unique, handmade work in diverse genres. Many indoor galleries in the area open their doors and offer treats for the eyes and taste buds. The people watching is great, too!

Shop policies

The name of my shop reflects my own philosophy. It refers to examining our beliefs and using what works and abandoning what does not. The definition of what works for one person may not be the same as another person's, and that is wonderful. Different styles means more options.

I believe in re-use, so many of my items are made from recycled clothing and vintage supplies. I find most of my materials at yard sales and thrift stores. This serves two purposes: it provides me with fabulous vintage supplies and it conserves the materials and energy resources required to make new supplies.

Please be assured that I have examined all of my supplies for defects, funky thrift-store smells and stains. Everything I use is in good condition.

If it is worth doing, it is worth doing well. I am a perfectionist. All of my items are made with care. I want to give you the best I have to offer. All the seams are professionally finished and the ends of crocheted items are securely woven in. Also, I try to give as complete information as I can about my items, including what it is made from and the proper care.

I hope you have a wonderfully satisfying Etsy experience. Thank you for visiting Whatever Works!
