What the Nell (Johnson)'s Story

I've been making things all the time since I was little! I draw, I paint, I sculpt, I make clothes, I make jewelry, you name it! I'm better with power tools than my boyfriend and I know my way around a platinum saw. If I didn't make things constantly, I'd actually have to deal with being bored. No thank you.

I studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology from 2010 to 2014. My sophomore year, my friend Marissa Von Bleicken became a contestant on the first season of The Glee Project. I've been friends with Marissa since we were both little kids, so when she asked me for a favor, I said sure. She said, "Nell, I want a huge pair of banana earrings to wear on TV," so I made her a huge pair of banana earrings and she wore them on TV. So many people asked where she'd got them that I had to scramble to put together the first version of What the Nell to sell those earrings.

I studied at Central Saint Martins for a semester before finishing my Bachelor's at FIT. Since then, this shop has gone from a side project while I finished my studies to being my main pursuit.

Now I live in Queens, where half my apartment is dedicated to What the Nell projects, and the other half is dedicated to rescued cats. For the moment, I only sell jewelry and paintings, but I hope to expand soon!

Thanks for stopping in! If you're looking for something more elegant, check out my other store at https://www.etsy.com/shop/marbleroadbynell

Strangers come up to Nell on the street and compliment the things she's wearing. Of course, she designed said things, but responds with a demure "Oh, thank you." It's my job to stand next to her and say "Also, she made it."
