Tattooer, Illustrator, Kewpie Collector Austin, TX
I'm originally from Central New York, bounced around the state and lived in New York City for three years. In 2008 I moved to Texas. Currently living in the strange and beautiful city of Austin, TX. I think I'll be here for a while.
I've been drawing and painting since I was a kid and freelance illustrating since, well at least since the tail end of high school. Tattooing is a lot like freelance illustration, right? You meet the client, they (hopefully) give you some ideas, ideas go on paper and eventually (after a few minor adjustments) the final product goes on skin and everybody is happy. Sure, why not?
So, I started an apprenticeship in New York in 2003 at "the shop which shall remain nameless" and finished my apprenticeship at Apocalypse Tattoo with Michael Davidson between 2004 and 2005.
Currently, I work with some amazing people at Golden Age Tattoo in Austin, TX
I dig pen and ink, liquid acrylic and water color, and some jobs/projects are best done digitally.
Every so often I find myself making "found junk" necklaces and resin setting tiny versions of my artwork in filigree bezels.
This results in some very cool, one of a kind combinations so when I do list them, they go fast.
On that note, any new work for sale will usually be announced via my Facebook page, www.facebook.com/missmartintattoos.
For those who shy away from jewelry and have no idea what the function of a print may be, don't fret! My artwork is also printed on various apparel and housewares at www.sourpussclothing.com.
As far as the "meaning" or "purpose" of these goofy drawings...
I suppose it's hard to talk about my work because I just don't think it's that deep.
It's approachable, clever (according to me, at least) at times and rarely without humor.
I've portrayed everything from 1980's cartoon heroins to historical misfits to fictional vixens that only exist in Tom Waits or Queens of the Stone Age lyrics. Subject is often but not always influenced by pop culture, music and/or which ever HBO series I may be binging on at the time the creative bug up the butt strikes.
So there you have it, now let's shop!
