At the community college where I taught and ran the art program, a local non-profit reached out for bowl donations to their annual soup-themed fundraising event. It had been a few years since I'd been on the wheel, but I was excited to give it a shot. My students and I put together a Throw-A-Thon, where anyone from the school and community could come out to use our wheels and make bowls for donation. Not only did we donate over 30 bowls, but I also discovered that I still loved working with clay on the wheel!
That summer I decided I wanted a set of cauldron mugs for myself, and this is where things got really fun. I threw my mugs, trimmed and fired them. I picked out my favorite black glazes and fired them again. To my surprise, not only did I absolutely love making them - but other people loved them too!
The beginnings of my business set the foundations for how it is run. I enjoy donating my work with non-profits that I believe in, like Bat World Sanctuary, and I love to experiment with ideas that I personally want to use in my own home and life. As I move forward with Whitney's Ceramics you can expect to see new designs every month AND a commitment to improved work that comes in sustainable packaging.
