Announcement    I make things from wool, wire, glass, resin and anything else that takes my fancy. Handmade tools and materials for knitters and handspinners are my speciality, but I also make lampwork glass beads and the occasional piece of finished jewellery. The sheep in my banner and profile pics are my own. We have a small flock of Shetland and Ryeland sheep, their wool is often on sale in my shop.

Please note: Unfortunately I am currently unable to ship items to Germany due to new packaging rules. I haven't yet found a way to disable shipments to Germany in my Etsy shop, so technically, an order to Germany would go through. But note, I will Refund ANY order with a German shipping address as I'm not permitted to post it.

Wildcraft: inspiring crafters since 2007

Wildcraft was set up and is run by me, Karen Tesson. I've been a fibre crafter and smallholder for a number of years. I used to also be a website programmer and ecological science researcher, but these days, running Wildcraft and my little farm is my full time occupation. I refer to myself as a full time entrepreneur, and I love my job!

Wildcraft began for a number of reasons. In 2007, I'd not long completed a PhD in eco-psychology (I'm nothing if not eclectic!), but the opportunities for further academic research were proving slim. I was doing some work as a freelance website designer, and, just for fun, I decided to design a web shop so I could sell wool from the little flock of sheep we had on my parents' farm.

Spurred on by friends on Ravelry (a social networking site for knitters and fibre crafters), I started dyeing wool, and before long I was designing drop spindles too. I added more sheep to the flock: some pedigree coloured Ryelands, and later some Shetlands too. Over the years, this little group has grown to a flock of (gulp!) fifty sheep. My sheep provide their wool for the shop, and some fantastic photo and story opportunities. I do now also buy in undyed wool, as I'm dyeing and selling more than my own flock can provide! I use British sourced materials whenever possible.

Meanwhile, I also honed and developed my drop spindle designs, working in resin with natural flowers and botanicals embedded, focussing on simple designs that were elegantly functional. It wasn't long before these spindles developed quite a following, and today they are stocked not only by Wildcraft, but in a number of boutique craft shops worldwide.

I draw my inspiration for my crafts and items for the shop from the natural world. My colourways are always inspired by colour combinations found in nature, much of it from the beautiful Dorset countryside where I live.

I'm currently experimenting with other techniques and materials, such as metal (copper and brass), enamelling, polymer clay and lampworked glass. Lately I've been making buttons and jewellery, but my brain is always buzzing with new ideas for spinners and knitters too.

The online shop has now been through several versions, and you can currently find the original (and larger) web shop at www.wildcraft.co.uk". I opened this Etsy shop as an outlet for some of my non-woolly handmade items, jewellery, craft kits and the like, and to showcase new and unusual things I've been working on for the main website.
