Crafting for sanity.
I initially started selling vintage on Etsy. I've always loved vintage clothes, from every era, but especially from the 1940's-1960's. I take pride in my knowledge of how to identify the era from the fabric, zipper, hemlines, and other details. Vintage clothes have a real sense of living history-it always amazes me how many decades delicate fabric can manage to survive intact. Vintage is timeless, it's utterly unique, and it will always have value.
I've always crafted, mostly sewing, and have always been hugely overambitious, making fancy cocktail attire for my Barbies at 11, trying to dress the family cat, you name it. Over the past several years I have mostly made things for myself, my home, and my two sons. I never really felt moved to make things to open a store with my creations until I got a huge dose of encouragement from people who spent a lot of time in my home. Not friends or family, but a different kind of relationship, which I've come to know a lot more about over the past several years-my older son's therapists.
My son is on the autistic spectrum-what used to be known as developmental delay. He's very smart, and very challenging. Both of my kids are intense, actually-but my older son is more so. I'm a stay at home mom, having chosen not to go back to my previous career. My life is a lot more demanding than most parents'. I need a break, a lot of them.
When I'm making things, I'm not worried, I'm not planning, I'm not being pulled in a dozen different directions. It's a place to channel my energy that is just for me. To have my creations be appreciated and wanted by others is just a great feeling. I wear the clothes I've made with pride and I know you will too.
I choose solid materials-vintage if available-mixing patterns and making combinations that are sometimes harmonious, sometimes unexpected.
