Mottainai (waste not - want not)

One can't help but be changed by travel. And living abroad allows one the opportunity to absorb even more of the culture in which they are living.

Our family was fortunate to live in Japan for two years. And one of the first skills we had to learn was how to take out our rubbish and recycling. No exaggeration - in our town - the pickup directions were printed on a two sided 11x17 sheet of paper. Each and every type of item needed to be separated and bagged in clear plastic bags, to be placed in the appropriate pick up spot on very specific days of the week/month. A far cry from the massive rubbish bins the average American home brings to the curb once a week! It made us think about what we were consuming, and where the waste goes. On an island nation, one simply cannot utilize massive amounts of land simply to store waste.

As a child, waste not - want not, was a concept that was widely implemented in our family. With limited financial resources, it was necessary. But as an adult, and with greater resources, I found myself purchasing disposable items with greater frequency. I never completely lost my reduce/reuse/recycle ways, but living in Japan showed me very clearly how much more I could be doing.

The fibers used in my yarns are all sourced from farms who utilize best animal and environmental practices. No farms practice mulesing and the superwash treatment facilities practice best environmental and wastewater practices.

When possible, I dye using collected rain water! I do have a long dry season so not all yarn is completed with the collected water. I use sun power to dry the yarn, even in winter when possible. Minimal packaging to prevent waste and I ship using biodegradable mailers made from recycled content. And they are reusable at least once (pull the tabs carefully, you'll find a second one inside for resealing and reusing!)

I'm so glad you found my little corner of the Etsy Universe. I enjoy creating both useful items as well as decorative objects. Whenever possible, I source local supplies as I believe that supporting our local businesses is paramount to sustaining our communities. But living in a tiny town - on a small island - requires me to shop online at times. I am always looking for "green" or environmentally friendly supplies. Whether recycled, organic or fair trade. I want to create a better life, not only for my own family but for all those whom I engage with.

All poly bags, both packaging and shipping - are BIODEGRADABLE in normal landfill operations! So, you may notice that they make some strange and rather loud crinkling noises. My best guess it's unavoidable when making the plant matter strong enough. But it's worth it to me, knowing we are not adding more plastic to the planet.
