About Windfall Jewellery
How I started Windfall...
I get emails almost daily asking what courses I did, what tools I use, how did I break into the market and launch myself as a designer. To keep me from wasting precious time in front of my computer and so I can be back at my workbench I am going to fill you in....
Wanderlust: "an irresistible desire to travel to understand one's very existence" I have been travelling the world since I was a teenager. I have lived in many cities and experienced and seen a lot of the world, good and bad. This is my biggest influence. The world, the universe, nature, existence.
When I was in India in 2011 I met a really beautiful Tibetan couple who handmade jewellery in Tibet and sold the jewellery at the markets in Goa India during peak tourist season. This was their life, it was simple beautiful and meaningful. It was this couple that inspired me to learn how to make my own. When I got back home I enrolled in a short course in Jewellery Design and also a short course in Silversmithing at CAE, which meant I worked as a full time fashion manager by day and was a student for 4 nights a week. At the end of these courses I had the BASIC knowledge of jewellery making and silver fabrication. I also can't stress to you how basic my knowledge was at this stage and still is.
After I completed this schooling I decided I was going to launch a label as a hobby and see where it took me. I started a Facebook page and released my first collection called 'Rattlebones' on Halloween 2011. The response was overwhelming, not only from friends who were super supportive but from people I didn't know. What came after my FB was a big cartel page and an ETSY where I opened a small online store with my first collection.
Quickly I had a fan base and people were starting to notice what I did, magazines were asking to feature my products, blogs were writing reviews and asking for interviews. A friend of mine had a booth at a Tattoo Convention and wanted me to come share it with him and set up a small display and sell my stuff. I have been getting tattooed for the past 10 years and have heaps of friends who are tattooers so falling into that scene was just a natural progression. From there everything just started snowballing. I had developed a big fan base, not only nationwide but internationally as well. People were placing orders and slowly stockists were emailing me wanting to stock my jewellery.
I have never been a real fashion person but now a huge part of my life is spent dealing with stylists, photographers and boutiques. Trust me it's not as glamourous as it sounds but it is a whole lot of fun.
This has happened in the space of 12 months. As I am writing this bio I am approaching Windfall's first birthday. In the space of a year i have built my dream label. Although this all may sound too good to be true, there was also a lot of sacrifice that had to made. I have given up a promising career, and basically my social life. I work LONG hours, I have a huge work load and I do this all my own whch means my time is precious. So although I meet some AMAZING people through this and it has shown my amazing sides in peple I didnt know they had, it is hard, I work HARD. I work a lot. There is pain, blood, tears, sacrifice but the reward is giving a gift to you that you get to cherish for a life time and that makes it all worth it.
All Windfall Jewellery collections are hand made from solid sterling silver or solid brass. All pieces are lovingly hand made, hand finished and hand polished in Windfall's studio in Melbourne Australia. Collections are released seasonally with each Windfall piece hand made to order.
