About

Sustainable style for you and your home

Handmade design

Coming from the heart, hands and mind of Dutch designer Inge van Geem, Windward Made offers beautiful scarves and art prints with her handmade designs. Inspired by the patterns, colors and compositions found in nature, the designs are beautifully layered yet wonderfully simple. Windward Made means made in an eco-friendly and ethical way and always with sustainability at heart.
Every design starts out as pencil or paint on paper. Working within a theme, the subject gets both painted with loose brush strokes, and drawn in a more simplified form, ready to be carved into a stamp. Inge carves all her stamps by hand, and uses their prints to create more intricate patterns on her computer.

Belgian linen

All scarves are made from the finest Belgian linen, which is grown, harvested, spun and woven just 222km (138 miles) from Windward Made HQ in the Netherlands. Linen is a sustainable and eco-friendly fabric, which does not require irrigation during growth, and considerably fewer pesticides and fertilizers than other crops. Linen is a fast growing crop, with only 100 days between sowing in March and harvesting in July. All parts of the plant are used, so there is no waste, and the fabric is 100% biodegradable and recyclable. Linen is strong and durable and holds it’s shape. While a bit stiff at first, it becomes softer (and stronger!) with each wash and wear. So wear your scarf a lot and it will be the finest thing you’ve ever felt in no time.

Digitally printed & ethically sewn

The Belgian linen is digitally printed at a small printing company in the Netherlands. Digital printing is an eco-friendly way of printing and dyeing fabric. The ink used is water based and reactive. Ink only gets printed exactly where it’s needed, so there is no waste. Water is used to clean the fabric and the printer, but is reused within the company to heat the building. After the linen is printed, it goes to a sewing atelier in Germany, where it’s cut and sewn into scarves. This means ethical production, and a product that’s made from start to finish, flax seed to scarf, within a 250km range. Windward Made scarves are modern yet timeless and only get better with use, so you can enjoy them for a long, long time.

Art prints

Windward Made archival art prints are created from original designs by Inge van Geem. They are printed to order on Bamboo FineArt Inkjet Paper from Hahnemühle. It has a natural warm tone, a certified archival grade and is made of a renewable resource, bamboo. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world and can grow up to 10 cm a day. It grows without the use of fertilizers and pesticides and regrows quickly after being cut down. The plant’s health is actually improved by cutting, so bamboo can be re-harvested every three years without any harmful effects on the environment. The ink used for printing is of archival quality with a fade resistance under glass of up to 98 years, so you can enjoy these, too, for however long you like.
