Why I started using lard/tallow in my shop:

I have gone back and forth with the idea of using lard/tallow in my soap recipes. I use to use plant based palm oil. Even though it says that it is sustainable, I felt that it would be better to replace it. Palm oil is a solid oil that helps to produce the lather in your soap as well as increasing the hardness of the bar making it last longer. However, after seeing so many devastating stories and pictures of the injured Orangutans in the rain-forest, I decided to leave it out of my recipes. After reading "Humblebee and Me" I have decided to go ahead and use the lard/tallow. I completely agree with Marie and I feel that this is the right solution. The lard or tallow is just a by product. The animal was not killed for the fat. It would be thrown away if not used. I feel that to honor every animal's life that we should use as much of it as possible. With palm oil, Orangutans are being injured and even killed just to harvest it. I know that with a lot of individuals there is an ICK factor that they just can't get out of their head. Two of my daughters would never use the lard or tallow products. For these individuals I will continue to offer a few completely vegan options that are palm free. I love my new soap recipe made with lard. It is extremely rich and moisturizing and makes a wonderful bar of soap.. If you don't have the ICK factor you should give it a try.

*Here is a little bit of what Marie @ Humblebee and Me has to say:

Marie - I use lard or tallow as the hardening fat in my soaps—it’s what makes the bar hard so it doesn’t turn into a pile of glop the second it gets wet in your shower. Both have a long and esteemed history in soap making, and are still used as the primary fats in many mass-produced soap bars today. So why, as a vegetarian, do I use lard or tallow in my soap? My thought process is this: tallow or lard is a waste product of the meat industry, and by using it I am not only helping to reduce waste but am also making the most of the life of an animal that was killed. There’s a bit of a debate in the soap making community as to which types of fat to use for the hardening fat. A lot of people like palm oil. It’s inexpensive, plant-based, and it works. But the harvesting of palm oil is also threatening a lot of vulnerable real estate and species in the tropics. Beef tallow on the other hand, is from cows. Some people don’t like that. As a vegetarian with environmental reasons I found myself a bit conflicted when I started making soap. I ended up settling on using tallow. The cow is already dead, and the tallow would just be thrown out if I didn’t use it.

Cathy's soaps are really terrific. They are a generous size and make your skin feel moisturized and clean. I have never found one I didn't like. They also smell wonderful without being overwhelming. I have also tried her SOLID LOTION BAR and CALENDULA CREAM. I have used one at night and the other during the day and they have greatly helped my skin. The LOTION BAR stays on well to protect the skin. The cream melts right into the skin with its moisture. As an added bonus, my fingernails look years younger from the moisturizing benefits. I never want to be without these products! Cathy is extremely kind and generous; you will be happy with your transaction.

Cathy's products are all absolutely wonderful. I've tried just about every kind of soap she makes, and they are all great....nice lather, creamy, moisturizing, light scents. I also love her lotion bars. I had a dry patch on my wrist that I couldn't get rid of and her calendula lotion bar took care of it. Cathy is a really friendly, kind seller who goes the extra mile. Give her a try! : )

About

Handcrafted - Palm Free - Cold Process Soap

Hello and welcome to my Winter Rose Soap shop. Thank you so much for visiting. Please let me know if you have any questions or special request.

My soap is handcrafted in small batches using the cold process soap method. Each soap bar is hand cut and then left to cure for a minimum of four weeks before being added to my shop.

I began making my homemade soap when I needed a product for my youngest son. It was much harder to find soap and other products years ago for individuals with sensitive skin or other special skin care needs, so I decided to learn how to make our own. I absolutely love the entire process of soap making and being able to create just what you need and are looking for.

I love to include organic herbs, flowers, and purees into my soap recipes. I infuse the herbs and flowers into my base oils and also use them to make a "tea" for the liquid part of the recipe. I use natural and organic fruit and vegetable purees such as avocado, pumpkin, banana, and apple for amazing skin loving properties. If you've never used a soap that has a puree added, you should give it a try :)

Please be sure to look up the ingredients in your soap or other products before using them to see if they are a proper fit for your skincare needs. I always recommend doing a patch test just to insure that you do not have a sensitivity to any of the ingredients.

Additional policies and FAQs
Please read all ingredient labels carefully. Each list of ingredients will be found on Etsy as well as with the product Itself. If you are in doubt about any ingredient I recommend doing a Patch Test before using. I use only high quality ingredients in all of my products, however there is always a chance of an individual being allergic to one of the base oils such as coconut oil or shea butter, or a specific essential oil or fragrance. If you have any questions or special requests, please do not hesitate to contact me.
