ABOUT WONTON IN A MILLION
********************************************
Home of the Steam Team, Wonton In A Million creates stationery items inspired by dimsum. What is dimsum, you ask? Think: weekend brunch combined with Chinese tapas combined with the buzzing of an Asian night market. Wonton In A Million was founded in April of 2015 when, one day, I was eating at the dimsum restaurant my dad manages in New York City—Oriental Garden—and realized my favorite food items could not be found in punny illustrated form anywhere. Thus, the Steam Team (Dream Team) was born.

My hope for Wonton In A Million is that as you let the Steam Team make all of your favorite stationery items SOUPER cute :) that you will also be inspired to eat more dimsum, to explore Chinatown communities everywhere, and to spread the love of this beloved cuisine and cultural ritual throughout the world. :)

Because for as long as I can remember, my dad has broken his back for Oriental Garden. He came to the US in the 1980’s, joined the restaurant as a busboy, and worked his way up to becoming the manager. But in recent years, the restaurant—despite being a favorite of famous chefs like David Chang and Eddie Huang—has been struggling. While my dad insists on the highest quality ingredients and sources the freshest seafood (he wakes up at 6am on his one day off every week to pick up fresh fish shipments!), Chinatown is changing. Its Chinese residents are being priced out of Manhattan.

In Chinese, dimsum means to “touch the heart.” So it is my hope that Wonton In A Million touches your heart, inspires you to come (back) to experience NYC’s Chinatown, and to eat MOAR dumplings everywhere (and everyday! 😂).

#DIMSUMLOVERSUNITE! ❤️

About

I'm all A'BAO dimsum taking over the world :)

Hi! My name is Cynthia and I'm the owner and Chief Dimsum Eater of Wonton In A Million, home of the Steam Team and of the cutest dimsum-inspired stationery and planner goodies.

My dad has managed a dimsum restaurant in New York City, Oriental Garden, since he came to New York City as a shy newlywed in the 1980's. Working up from being a bus boy to managing David Chang's go-to restaurant, he has committed his entire adult life to this business. But while he has managed to maintain an incredible dining experience - insisting on the highest quality ingredients and sourcing the freshest seafood, even waking up at 6am on his one day off every week to pick up fresh fish from Flushing - the restaurant still struggles as its regular customers are being priced out of Manhattan's Chinatown.

So one day, when I was waiting to eat there and the thought floated into my head... "Wouldn't it be great if there were punny, dimsum greeting cards?" I thought, maybe... this is... how I could use what I know how to do - design - to figure out how to bring people back into Chinatown.

That night, I set out to design a line of punny dimsum cards. My hope is that Wonton In A Million, as a brand, will introduce dimsum to the whole of New York City, help to revive the neighborhood I grew up in, and hopefully, eventually, spread the love of this delicious meal and social ritual throughout the world. :)

Follow along on my journey on Instagram at @wontoninamillion and on Facebook in the group wontoninamillion.com/facebook. Thank you so much for reading all the way here. I have so many ideas in the works - including plushies and traveling dimsum pop-up stores. None of it would be possible without all of you dimsum lovers <3 Hope to see you on Instagram @wontoninamillion, where you can keep up to date on the latest and greatest in dimsum and meet the other thousands of members of the Wonton Family!
