John Buonauro entered the world of fine art rather late in life. Born in Chicago, where he was raised, attended Morton College, and worked. His true happiness was found when he was surrounded by nature. Most of his free time as an adult has found him hiking mountain trails, deep canyons, beautiful deserts and the shorelines of both coasts. He has spent the past 25 years in and around Arizona. His deep reverence for nature has given him intimate knowledge of his subject matter.
Perhaps this is what was needed to bring out the awe-inspiring beauty of his unique 3-dimensional work. Two-dimensional flat painting was inadequate for John to show us the things that he has experienced. His personal philosophy dictates his “projects”. His walks with nature enable him to “find” his next creation. For John, “The hunt is the thing. I have to see what something can be.”
With his unique style of carving in wood and then painting in oils, each piece of work comes alive. He incorporates wire in a few of his pieces for the most delicate items that couldn’t be carved from wood.
His most recent fascination is with our past…Native Americana. He is carving and creating arrowhead and pottery that is being incorporated in his creations. He is using stone and found pieces of wood as backdrops for his visions.
Over the years, John has been represented in numerous galleries across the country, including Sedona, Arizona. He is in several private collections. He is also presented on various websites. John was featured in the Mar/Apr 2006 issue of the Dazzling Desert Magazine.
