About

Turning nature's bounty into artistic and sometimes practical works of value

I got back into wood working in 2005 after an absence of several years. Flat work had been my focus until on day I attended a wood working show and saw the evolution of wood turning.

Flat work is a process of addition. You add pieces and parts until the project is complete and the final item is reveled. Woodurning is a process of subtraction. You remove material until the final item is reveled and the project is complete.

Negative space and positive space compete for attention in any project and finding balance is key to success.

I like to work with salvaged wood. Trees destined for the landfill or the burn pile. Over 4 million board feet of useable lumber finds it way to landfills in the US every year from urban and suburban landscape management. These are the raw materials that otherwise would have been lost.

My studio is at best a limited edition shop but mostly a "one-of-a-kind" studio. Let us find the right board, the right log or the right design just for you.

My first experience with wood working was in 8th grade shop. It was there that I fell in love with the creative process. My dad bought me my first lathe that summer. It has been a love affair ever since. Studio http://www.thewoodartiststudio.com

Welcome to The Wooden Quill

At The Wooden Quill we are dedicated to providing quality writing instruments and turnings custom crafted from native and exotic woods as well as modern composite materials. Each pen blank and turning blank is hand selected to produce a unique writing instrument or turning that says the owner appreciates quality. Each turning is unique and whenever possible we use recycled materials from trees that are already down.

Thanks for visiting and come back often. There is always something turning in the shop.

Payment
Payment is expected within 7 days. The sooner I receive payment, the sooner I will ship your order!

We only accept PayPal, Etsy Direct and Etsy Gift Cards. Upon notification of payment we usually ship within 1-2 business days. If your shipment is delayed in anyway we will notify you via email.

Items shipped to Florida will be charged sales tax of 7%.

If you need to cancel a transaction, please contact me. I'm flexible on all stock items. Customized orders are not refundable.
Shipping
I will ship your item within 2 business days after I receive payment. If there is any confusion, communication, or emergency, it could delay shipment. My goal is to get your item to you as quickly as possible! Please provide an accurate street address.

Items can be combined for shipping. In most cases there is a significant cost savings. From 1 to 16 ounces is usually the same cost. If combined shipping details are not clear on the item listing, please contact me.

If you think you will order more from me in the near future, I will hold your (paid for) item for any reasonable length of time in order to combine it with other items that you might choose to purchase. Please contact me at the time of payment if you are interested, so that I don't ship your package out right away.

My preferred shipping method is USPS Priority mail. I do ship via FedEx when requested or economical. They are consistent and reliable. They offer package tracking, signature options, and reasonable insurance. Delivery time to almost anywhere in the "Lower 48" United States is 5 days or less.

Shipments to Alaska and Hawaii can be Express or USPS (Post Office Mail). USPS takes longer, and doesn't offer package tracking, but costs less.

Expedited (Express) shipping is available for packages that need to arrive faster. They will go by FEdEx, and can arrive in 1, 2, or 3 days depending on the service selected. There is a cost for this, of course. If it is not listed with the item, please email me to ask about cost and availability.

International shipments will be via USPS only. I can not be responsible for how long International shipments take to arrive! Please contact me for the cost.

If an International shipment can not be delivered the customer is responsible for all shipping costs necessary to return the item to us. The customer may elect to abandon the sale with no refund.
Refunds and Exchanges
I really want you to be happy with your purchase!

Any item that is in perfectly new condition may be returned, for any reason, within 5 days of receipt, for an exchange or a full refund of the purchase price.

For defects in workmanship or materials that appear after a longer time, please contact me to resolve the issue.

The customer will pay for the shipping both ways unless there is a defect in the item or a mistake on my part.
Additional policies and FAQs
I will do my very best to accurately represent each of my listed pieces with photographs and descriptions. Due to the nature of, well, nature, items made from wood can have texture or irregularities that don't show up well in pictures. This is especially the case with the burls and crotch wood! I don't consider these features to be "defects". They are part of what makes wood a living, expressive medium to work with and to own. I think you will be pleased with the quality of my work!

Wooden pieces that are handled will develop a patina over time. Most woods will change in color over time. This is natural, and should be expected. Wood also reacts to temperature and humidity as the seasons change.

Dyed (applied color) pieces will keep their color much better than naturally colored wood pieces will.

Stabilized (resin impregnated) wood will wear better and is more resistant to environmental conditions than natural wood.

My pieces are made from Kiln Dried Wood or air dried and should not crack unless they are exposed to unfriendly elements (see next paragraph).

Care of Wood:

Items made of wood are sensitive to light, water, and temperature/humidity changes. None of my items are made to go in the dishwasher, washing machine, or microwave!! Please keep your Wood Artwork out of direct sunlight to avoid bleaching or cracking. Please avoid temperature and humidity extremes. If the wood gets wet, dry it off immediately.

Different pieces are given a a variety of natural, water resistant or waterproof finishes. Please don't try to refinish your piece with anything else without contacting me first.

Wood is fairly soft, and can scratch or dent if treated roughly.

Any questions? Please contact me!

If you have a problem or issue, please let me have a chance to resolve it. I really want you to be pleased with your purchase!
