Me encantan los colores vibrantes y los detalles interminables en un pez. Disfruto trabajando en la tienda para crear un duplicado hermoso y lo más cercano posible de un espécimen en particular. Hay tantas variaciones entre especies e incluso en una especie en particular. Los colores me llaman la atención y la forma en que los colores de los peces se complementan entre sí. Ver cuántos colores hay en un pez es un verdadero desafío para recrear, pero uno que acepto e intento hacer en mis esculturas.

Nací y crecí en Cedar City, Utah, hogar del Festival de Shakespeare ganador del Premio Tony. Cedar City está rodeada de altas y hermosas montañas, algunas que se elevan hasta 10,000 pies. Asistí a la Universidad del Sur de Utah en Cedar City y me gradué con una licenciatura en educación en artes industriales. Me retiré como director de transporte para el Distrito Escolar del Condado de Iron en 2016. Desde que era muy joven he pescado en los lagos y arroyos de estas montañas del sur de Utah. Siempre me ha gustado estar al aire libre y ver las maravillas de la naturaleza. Mis tallas están creadas a partir del álamo temblón del sur de Utah que se encuentra en las montañas cercanas a mi estudio. Disfruto explorando las montañas en busca del tronco de álamo temblón adecuado para liberar mi próxima talla. Disfruto tallando álamo temblón no solo por la abundancia cerca, sino por su facilidad para tallar y su capacidad para mantener grandes detalles. Mis primeras tallas, en 1996, eran diferentes de mis tallas de hoy. Al principio dejé el grano natural expuesto y simplemente lo teñí para indicar los diferentes colores del pescado. A través del estudio de otros y por ensayo y error, mis tallas han evolucionado a lo que son hoy.

He vendido mis tallas, desde 1996, a individuos en Utah, Arkansas, Wyoming, Nevada, Carolina del Sur, Connecticut, Florida, Nueva Jersey, Texas y Virginia. He vendido desde espectáculos, un Parque Nacional, galerías de arte y desde contacto personal. También he hecho comisiones a lo largo de los años. Mis tallas han aparecido en el periódico local y han ganado el Gran Premio de la Feria del Condado de Iron y también una cinta azul y el 1er lugar en la feria del condado.

Únicos en su tipo, firmados y numerados, los peces de caza tallados a mano son una gran adición a cualquier espacio vital. Cada escultura representa grandes detalles en los músculos del cuerpo, la acción de las aletas, los ojos y las escamas. Las suaves y elegantes líneas de los peces en diferentes poses realzan la belleza de cada escultura. Cada escultura está montada en artículos naturales o rocas, árboles o ramas hechas a mano. Se tiene cuidado de asegurarse de que se vean lo más realistas posible. Cada escultura se combina con el montaje correcto, ya sea una rama natural o un tocón o madera a la deriva o una base y rocas hechas a mano.

Mis grabados son una forma de alejarme de tallar peces por un momento y me da tiempo para reenfocarme. Grabo principalmente la vida silvestre y disfruto mucho haciéndolo. Se necesita un conjunto completamente diferente de habilidades para grabar. Me gusta pasar por el proceso de grabado y terminar un proyecto. También me gusta encontrar material para grabar y buscar nuevas ideas.

I love to the vibrant colors and unending detail in a fish. I enjoy working in the shop to create a beautiful and as near as possible, exact duplicate of a particular specimen. There are so many variations between species and even in a particular species. Colors catch my eye and the way the fishes colors complement each other. Seeing how many colors are in a fish is a real challenge to recreate, but one I accept and attempt to do in my sculptures.

I was born and raised in Cedar City, Utah home of the Tony Award winning Shakespearean Festival. Cedar City is surrounded by high beautiful mountains some rising as high as 10,000 feet. I attended Southern Utah University in Cedar City and graduated with a BS degree in industrial arts education. I retired as director of transportation for the Iron County School District in 2016. Ever since I was very young I have fished the lakes and streams of these Southern Utah mountains. I have always liked being in the outdoors and seeing the wonders of nature. My experience in fishing and my keen eye for colors and various details of the fish have enabled me to incorporate them into my sculptures.

My carvings are created from Southern Utah aspen found in the mountains close to my studio. I enjoy exploring the mountains in search of just the right aspen log to release my next carving from. I enjoy carving aspen not only because of the abundance close by but because of it’s ease of carving and it’s ability to hold great detail. My first carvings, back in 1996, were different from my carvings of today. In the beginning I left the natural grain exposed and just tinted it to indicated the different colors of the fish. Through study of others and by trial and error my carvings have evolved to what they are today.

I have sold my carvings, since 1996, to individuals in Utah, Arkansas, Wyoming, Nevada, South Carolina, Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey, Texas and Virginia. I have sold from shows, a National Park, art galleries and from personal contact. I have done commissions over the years also. My carvings have been featured in the local news paper and have won Grand Prize from the Iron County Fair and also a blue ribbon and 1st place at the county fair.

One of a kind, signed and numbered, Hand carved game fish are great addition to any living space. Each sculpture depicts great detail in body muscles, fin action, eyes and scales. The smooth graceful lines of the fish in different poses enhance the beauty of each sculpture. Each sculpture is mounted on either natural items or hand made rocks, trees or branches. Care is taken to make sure they look as realistic as possible. Each sculpture is matched to just the right mount, be it a natural branch or stump or driftwood or a hand made base and rocks.

My engravings are a way for me to step away from carving fish for a moment and allows me time to refocus. I engrave mostly wildlife and enjoy very much doing it. It takes a whole different set of skills to engrave. I enjoy going through the process of engraving and finishing a project. I also enjoy finding material to engrave and searching for new ideas.
