About

Alice's Adventures...

I launched Wool & Water in Amsterdam in 2013 soon after relocating from London. I had learnt to knit over 10 years prior as a way to pass the time on set, as soon as I started I was hooked! I loved the textile, the feeling of the beautiful, natural fibres and then when I started knitting for British designers and labels, the creativity and limitless boundaries to develop & produce all sorts of pieces.

Eventually one of the designers I was knitting for told me I should consider launching my own label as I clearly had a unique point of view. Thanks to a well timed ad job I was able to study knitwear design at the awesome Knit One on Brighton and soon after that moved to Amsterdam with my husband Joe and our two cats Gary & Cooper.

After 6 months of playing, sketching and swatching I launched Wool & Water as an unexpected knitwear label. I have always been inspired by the everyday elegance of yesterday, classic movies and style. I am fascinated with combining traditional craft, style heritage with a modern aesthetic and so my range of Bow Ties was launched.

The response was so good and wide that I added a fun Pet Bow Tie range and then Skinny Ties & Suspenders/Braces.

All my pieces are gender neutral and designed to have fun however you choose to style them.

I love creating details that once added to your outfit, styled the way you wear them reveal just a flash of your personality, inspire a second look at you and how you present yourself, whether that simply be by wearing unexpected knitwear or the contrast detail on the suspenders as you leave the room. All my details are there to let you share something with the world and as is the case time and time again, provoke conversation with a stranger who soon becomes a friend.

I design and knit everything myself in my Amsterdam home studio. I use a hand powered domestic knitting machine (circa 1979) and hand seam, stitch and finish everything myself using only natural fibres such as Cotton, Lambswool & Merino. I only make 25 of each design which means every piece is limited edition and comes with it's specific edition tag.

I am passionate about natural fibres and the many many qualities they provide plus of course they are sustainable and if properly looked after, can last a lifetime.

Two years in and Wool & Water has made pieces for; parties, weddings, events, actors, TV presenters, the band Public Service Broadcasting, The Tony Awards, The Andaz Hotel, Amsterdam and there is so much more to come!
