A lot has happened this summer but let’s not forget one very important thing and that is that someone in England commissioned a giant Trump baby blimp.
I have kind of a lot to do today but honestly no scheduled personal commitments will keep me from my art on this momentous occasion. Thank you to the creators of the #trumpbabyblimp for the inspiration to commemorate this...whatever this is.

About

snarky comments & feminist sentiments

I have always enjoyed drawing. I have also always enjoyed a well-timed, snarky comment. This little shop combines both of these passions.

My first venture into drawing for other people occurred during my first year of graduate school. I was working in Residence Life and supervising 20 RAs, and I wanted to get them a thoughtful end of the year gift but also only made pretty much $0 a year (#gradstudentlife). Unsatisfied with my original idea of buying them each a bag of chips at the dining hall with my meal plan, it occurred to me that I should try my hand at doing a group portrait of all of them. I stayed up all night creeping them all on Facebook and doing my best rendition of them, to present to them at our last staff meeting the next day (because all of my best ideas happen at the last minute).

When I handed out the drawings, I was nervous about how a custom caricature drawing (albeit a flattering one) would be received - but my staff LOVED it. They delighted in pointing out the accuracies of the drawing even in its simplified style. "I'm wearing these earrings right now!" "My hair looks exactly like this!" Yes, I know, Greg. Because I scoured your Facebook for hours trying to perfect your hairstyle. One person with a full beard shaved the night before the staff meeting and didn't tell me - this was the only inaccuracy. I am still upset about it 8 years later.

As my illustrious Residence Life career continued, I would draw my staff at the end of each year, and they came to expect it as their end of year gift. With upwards of 5 or 6 of these adorning my office, others who supervised RAs started coming to me to ask to do drawings for them as well - and of course for a nominal fee I'm always happy to help my colleagues. I was encouraged to start an Etsy shop and POOF Katy Maher Art was born.

Since starting my shop, I have loved seeing the uses that people come up with for my silly character drawings - from non-traditional save the dates to a full set of family magnets to 1,000 pieces of confetti with a drawing of a baby for his first birthday party!

While I love doing custom work, my brain was also was housing many, many snarky jokes and geeky puns that I just could not keep to myself - so I started drawing cards and stickers to make sure my commentary could see the light of day. For several years I was just bopping along making silly comments and drawing cats dressed as sharks and just living a regular life.

Then some orange monster with tiny hands got elected in 2016 and I had a lot of um feelings. I wanted to do something but had no idea where to start. I designed my first laptop sticker - my "nevertheless she persisted" design - and donated the proceeds to the ACLU. Since then, I've made a bunch more feminist, anti-Trump, and political designs, all of which contribute a portion of the proceeds go to the ACLU. I'm happy to have an outlet and a very small way to contribute to counteract all of the crap going on in the world today, and look forward to doing more as this shop grows.

I love talking to customers! If you ever have an idea for a sticker or want to commission a custom portrait or other piece of art, please contact me!
