About

Hand Embroidery: A Modern Take on a Timeless Art

Why hankies?
You may not know it yet, but a hand embroidered handkerchief is really an accessory that everyone should have at least one, and a gift to be given. Wrenbirdarts' hankies aren't the hankies that your grandpa carries wadded up in his pocket. Like almost every accessory worth it's salt, hankies have also undergone a transformation.

My hankies are charming little accessories that you won't realize how much you love, until you've kept it in your pocket. But the embroidery!?! Maybe it's a nickname, or an animal, or even a little mantra to carry around. Hankies are real and personal. You can feel the embroidery stand out from the fabric. Sometimes they may catch a stray tear, clean off your glasses, that hankie is there for you, just in case.

Hankies are gifted for lots of occasions too. For a far away friend, someone going through a life change, someone you loooove, an anniversary, a friendiversary, birthdays, Valentines Day, Christmas, Hanukkah, new jobs, break-ups, make-ups, and just because. And, of course, weddings, for the wedding party, to propose to your bridesmaids, for your mom or dad, and of course for the bride, there will be tears.

Not into hankies?
How about embroidering some hoop art instead? Embroidery patterns are brand new to wrenbirdarts, as of 2016. All of the designs are, of course, original. Each pattern comes with a booklet and instructions.

Embroidered Art
From time to time, a bolt of inspiration hits me, and I am compelled to embroider a hoop. Maybe it's a color combination, a neat cloud formation, or something I'm craving to eat. That's how my hoops happen. Though the idea is the easy part, each hoop takes me anywhere from a couple of hours to a few weeks to finish. There are lots of stitches that go into even a small piece of hoop art.

About Me
I (Erin) am wrenbirdarts. When I started embroidering, I loved the look of a vintage hankie, but couldn't get behind the dated styles. So, I made my own patterns, and opened an Etsy shop. In 2012! And since then, I have sold more than 15,000 hankies, and counting.

I grew up in the Midwest, in Iowa and Nebraska, and went to school with the dream of being a psychologist or a social worker. After finishing my master's degree, I realized maybe it wasn't for me. So, while I figured out a new plan for my life, I started embroidering. I had always been an avid crafter, and had a creative mind. After learning how to embroider, I knew I was in love and scrapped all previous work, and started a business selling my original designs through Etsy and local boutiques. My nickname (wren bird) became the name for her business, thus wrenbirdarts was hatched.

My work has appeared in SeattleMet, Parade, and Glamour Magazines. You may have also seen my hankies on Buzzfeed, Huffington Post, Huffpost Weddings. I've also been fortunate to have been featured on numerous blogs and listicles.

I am currently living in Bellingham, Washington, and am enjoying small town life for a change.
