TENUGUI - The Magic of Simple 100% Cotton Cloth
Do you know TENUGUI? Tenugui is a traditional rectangular towel made of 100% cotton that is steeped in many decades of Japanese history. The Japanese word "TE" means hand, and "Nugui" describes the act of wiping. A part from using this traditional towel for wrapping one's head like a bandanna, it can also be used to wrap gifts, as a decoration for the home, or even can be used for a daily exercise tool like a Yoga strap.
Here is my Tenugui Story...
I knew Tenugui since I was very little. My Grandpa and Grandma were using tenugui everyday as a towel, wash and dry their body and face with Tenugui. Not only that, they wore Tenugui as a hat or a scarf, just like other grandparents. I grow up in Japan, and always there were Tenugui around in my daily life, in the kitchen, in the bathroom, in the living room or bed room, and also any outdoor activities.
Even though, I have never thought about tenugui deeply, until my husband got cancer in 2002.
My family sent him tenugui as a head cover during cancer treatment, and he loved it. The soft fabric was so gentle on his treated skin and the size was perfect to wrap and cover his head. And also, easy to wash and dry... We both enjoyed the variety of colors, patterns of tenugui and creating own style to wear it. But most of all we enjoyed feeling the changing seasons and beauty of life through the Art of Tenugui. Tenugui always brought us a warm happy smile... Yes, that was truly... TENUUGI MAGIC.
I am hoping that be able to bring you a smile via Tenugui, for the people who are suffering unexpected sickness or even people who are struggling difficult time in many reasons...
