Cultivating a deep, everyday relationship with creativity is one of my deepest values.

Creativity is a catalyst that enables me to burst through perceived obstacles. It is the doorway and the windows and the tiny, hidden-in-plain-view openings to wonder and the pursuit of my own personal happiness…

In 2004, I started making Xmittens to keep warm in my cold studio. I had just graduated from college with an art degree, survived a terrible car accident and learned how to walk again. I was totally unsure of what to do next, so I concentrated on learning new skills in the realm that has always excited me most: textiles.

As I explored my textile passions, I realized that I could create a textile and apparel business that emphasizes eco-accountability, thoughtful design and material sourcing, creates well-fitting and durable items, and considers the body an exhibition space for functional art-to-wear. I thoroughly enjoy being an entrepreneur...I find business to be a creative realm for the left side of my brain which balances the wild right side.

Not only is one of my purposes in life is by making actual objects, I also facilitate creativity in others by direct interactions in a class, in a volunteer art experiences, or by enabling another person’s innate creativity to flourish by being inspired by, being immersed in, or wearing one of my creations. Sometimes, I help facilitate creativity by revealing it as a driving force in my own life…as a real possibility and theme for a rich and authentic life.

As a part-time day job I work for the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts in a position that helps other Teaching Artists find jobs and create Artist Residencies in schools and in community organizations in the Pittsburgh region. Pretty darn cool.

(BTW: most of the people listed as "shop members" on the right hand side of the page are actually my models and do not have design input, nor help me in creating Xmittens. They are all real customers, friends and awesome people. I thought I should give them some credit somewhere on Etsy because without them I would not be able to accomplish most of my creative endeavors. All of them are creative themselves and, if you have an opportunity for them in their chosen field, please let me know and I will pass along your information to them. Thanks!)

Owner, Designer, Curator, Creative Director, Photographer, Photo Editor, Fabric Washer, Peddler, Marketing Director, Manager, Driver

Textile arts are my driving passion. All my creations have roots in a journey to Japan where I learned shibori fabric dyeing. Now, I'm learning about digital surface pattern design with a goal of releasing a line of patterns, fabrics and gift wrap.

  • Lisa

    Fabric Cutter, Shipping, Kickass Friend

Lisa has been my friend for 16 years. Since 2008, she has helped me in my studio by cutting fabric, shipping packages and occasionally talking me down from my crazy tree. She is a fantastic poet and creates soundscapes with words. She is the best.

  • Betsy

    Photography, Modeling

Betsy is a fantastic photographer/model who currently shoots all of my lifestyle shots and some of the product shots, too. We giggle a lot during photo shoots. She also works in marketing for "Farm Kings" the reality show about brother farmers.

  • Jocelyn

Jocelyn has been modeling for Xmittens since March 2013. She is super duper! She is also an actress and a singer of superb caliber. I am very lucky to work with her...she is becoming the face of Xmittens!

  • Becky

Becky freaking rocks! She became a model for me in 2009 and has periodically posed for Xmittens since then. She has a degree in Arts Management, loves cats and is not single (sorry).

  • Nora

Nora is a massage therapist (the most intuitive I have worked with) and is currently writing a fantasy novel. I am so lucky she said yes to modeling! My photos of her are featured in marketing campaigns for the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts Shop.

  • Gary

    Model, Graphic Designer

Gary is a supremo graphic designer who has been working with me on re-designing the Xmittens brand. He's also a model for Xmittens and owns a lot of 'em in bright colors. He is an aspiring fashion designer and teaches pattern-making.

  • James!

James is a long-time friend, ex-neighbor and an Xmittens model. I hear he just posed for a sexy dad calendar- rock on! Check out his laser cut jewelry, Naked Geometry: https://www.facebook.com/JamesGyreArt that is inspired by sacred geometry.

<Xmittens SIZE GUIDE Recommendations>

**Regular Length Xmittens**
measurement of palm width (from edge of palm under pinky finger to edge of palm under index finger on one side of your hand only) = size
2.5"-3" = Xtra Small 6.4 cm - 7.6 cm
3"-3.5" = Small 7.6 cm - 8.9 cm
3.5"- 4" = Medium 8.9 cm- 10.2 cm
4"- 4.5" = Large 10.2 cm- 11. 4 cm
4.5" - 5" = Xtra Large (mostly only available made-to-order)
5" + = Custom Order

If in doubt, buy a LARGE for men. Petite women will most likely be a small, while average women will be a medium. If you can never find gloves that fit because they are all too big, measure your palm and contact me for an extra small size pair of Xmittens.

Each pair of Xmittens varies slightly in length, but will be in the 6"-7" TOTAL Length range.

**Convertible Xmittens** Same guidelines as for Regular length Xmittens, but I designed them to be just slightly larger to accommodate all of the movement an entirely enclosed hand needs to function. If your hand width is on the cusp of a size, order the smaller size.

**Xtra long Xmittens**

Standard Extra Long Xmittens measure about 14" long which will be just before the elbow for most people. The finger covering part of the Xmittens will be about 1.75" long.

Size Palm Measurement Forearm Circumference measurement
measure just below elbow
Small 3"-3.5" 6.5"-8.5" , 16.5 - 21. 6 cm
Medium 3.5"- 4", 8.5"-10" , 21.6 cm- 25.4
Large 4"-4.5" 9.5"-11.5", 24 cm-29.2 cm

Other item measurements are available by request. Just convo me and I will get back to you within 36 hours. Thanks!
