About XrayAnn

{ unique.fiber.products }

XrayAnn’s is an independent, one-woman business, based out of my small home studio located in the wooded seclusion of Northwest Wisconsin. I am also the photographer, bookkeeper, shipper, promoter, and whatever else my business needs.

My passion for creating came from my grandmother, who taught me most of my crafting skills at an early age. Numerous craft shows, ceramics classes and knitting/crochet projects later, and I was seriously hooked.

I tend to work in fast paced, erratic dye sessions (mostly during my kids' naptimes). Sometimes I find it hard to concentrate on dye recipes for the repeatable colorways, often asking myself “What would happen if…” This will result in awesome colorways, but ones that I could never create again ever, even if I wanted to.

At times I would like to spend every waking moment spinning, dyeing, knitting or crocheting, but I would never see my family again, so I have been trying to find the age-old balance between work (i.e. yarn hoarding/dyeing/making) and family.

I hope you have as much fun using my creations as I had making them. Enjoy your stay in my Etsy shop and come back often to see what's new!

Thanks for visiting my shop! My name is Heide and I love to create fiber goodness!

All of my fibers are dyed by hand with professional dyes. Colorways are created by my own imagination, and I mix my own unique colors just before dyeing.

Due to the nature of the hand dyeing process, colors may vary slightly from dye bath to dye bath, or even skein to skein. Please buy enough for your project! You can create more uniformity with hand dyed yarns if you alternate skeins every few rows throughout your project.

A note about caring for your yarn:
Please keep in mind that vibrant, contrasting yarns such as turquoise and white, do not mix well, whether using hand-dyed yarns or commercially-dyed yarns. It’s always recommended to swatch, and avoid soaking your yarn after your item is completed. If you must block an item, use a steaming or spray method. If your item becomes soiled, then spot clean with a mild, non-fragranced detergent.

I use professional dyes on all my yarns, and every skein is steam set, and rinsed out with both hot and cold water with textile detergent until the water runs clear. The pH, and chemical makeup of the water at my studio may be different from the water that you use. I try to ensure that the yarns do not bleed in my water conditions, but I cannot guarantee that for your own water conditions.

If you find your yarn is a bleeder, wind it into hank form, rinse with cold water and a drop of mild, non-fragranced detergent. Less is best. In my experience, fragranced wool washes will leach out color, as will warm or hot water. If you have a serious bleeder, you’ll need to set the dye. You will need an acid (vinegar) and heat to set the dye. Grab a metal pot (one you won’t again use for food) and fill with tap water and a glug or two of vinegar. Submerge your yarn and slowly, slowly bring up the temperature. Bring up the temperature too fast and you’ll felt the fibers. Let simmer for 30 minutes to an hour or so. Do not boil. Turn off the heat and let it sit overnight. Rinse with cold, free-flowing water.

About crocking: Crocking is dye transfer, when excess dye sits on the surface of the yarn and comes off when rubbed (think how some indigo-dyed jeans can color your legs). It isn’t necessarily indicative of a bleeder, and is more likely to happen with the brighter, more vibrant colors, especially greens and blues.

Please don’t hesitate to convo me if you have any questions!
