About

Yellow Bear UK

Hello! I'm Claire, and I've recently started running Yellow Bear UK; a sustainable eco-friendly business selling products made with love, by me, in Brighton. My aim is to create beautiful, simple, handmade, reusable items that help you to cut out single-use waste from your lives.

When I was younger the slogan: ‘reduce, re-use, recycle’ was followed with much enthusiasm in my family, in fact I remember always having random things used for different purposes once reaching their 'end-life'. For instance when my shoes no longer fit they became plant pots in the garden, my mums laddered tights became supports for plants to grow up, any copper pipes my dad came across became frames for his beloved tomatoes to climb up. This ethos of re-using and upcycling inspired me from a young age, whilst at school my design projects included: a sofa-bed frame made of discarded wooden pallets, a clock made from old CD's and a candle holder made of bent forks! These early experiences have meant that this ethos is at the core of Yellow Bear UK. All of my products and packaging are made from natural, compostable and/or recycled materials and I endeavour to grow and learn with the business about further ways to save our planet.

Looking through my Etsy shop you may come across evidence of a former business of mine: Yellow Bear Wares, in which I created jewellery by bending vintage knitting needles, I decided to stop this business partly because the fumes from heating the plastic were too toxic to have in a home with a small child. Also I suffered a lot from Mental Health issues after I had my daughter (Postpartum Psychosis, Maternal OCD and General anxiety) this and becoming a mother meant I was no longer able to run my small business. Recovery is a long journey, I am still on it and probably always will be, but just recently since having started 'Yellow Bear UK' I have been doing pretty great, it's like meeting an old friend only this time I feel more connected to the purpose of the business, I am more positive, I have less anxiety, it feels so good to be making again! I am humbled by the response to my new products and am so greatful to be creating things that help people rid themselves of single-use items and it makes me incredibly happy that through running this business I am partly making a tiny, tiny difference to our earth.

The first product I am stocking in my Etsy shop and at markets is my beeswax wraps, the perfect alternative to cling-film, these are made using a mixture of local and other UK sourced beeswax, pure organic jojoba oil and natural pine resin. All of the fabrics I use for these wraps are 100% cotton and sourced from local makers fabric cut-offs or vintage supplies. Rather than buying new, I chose the more sustainable option of using pre-loved fabrics. This means that each pack of wraps is unique to you! I am also making and selling beeswax wrap renewal blocks, these are a mixture of the wax, jojoba oil and pine resin and will give your wraps a whole new lease of life once you use them. One goal I have is to also create and sell a beeswax wrap kit so that you can make your own wraps easily and affordably at home. I will gradually be adding other kinds of items that fit in with my ethos such as reusable face wipes, eye make-up rounds, baby wipes, reusable breast-feeding pads and produce bags for shopping by weight.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions about my products, wholesale enquiries or just for advice on reducing the single-use waste from your lives and please check my Instagram etc for updates on the business and my own eco-friendly antics, it's a hard journey but so much easier when you take one tiny step at a time.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and please enjoy perusing my shop!
