Handprinted linoblock fabric

I learned to block print on fabric abouta decade ago when I was attending Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, Ny. I've always been drawn to bold graphic sensibility that lino block printing has. I've brought together my love for early colonial design motifs with fabric printing as a way to bring a piece of the past in modern everyday living.

Early colonial history is known for being very dry aesthetically-think pilgrims/puritans with their plain dress, and lack of home decor. The one place they were allowed to stylistically "cut loose" were on their gravestones. From the early crude skull with wings carvings(known as memento mori), the the graceful willow trees of the early 1700s. The reason for this is most people at the time were illiterate, and they needed a strong visual reminders of their religious beliefs. You can learn a lot about the culture and fads of the times-for example, the willow tree was a dominant motif in the early 1700s because it had recently been introduced in the North America, and they were quite the rage!
