My necklace arrived as promised about 2-3 business days after I ordered it. The packaging was beautiful --- I will likely order another one of these necklaces as a birthday gift for my mom. The handwritten note from Lisa was also a nice touch. I highly recommend this seller and her lovely designs!

My daughter liked ZelmaRose's items in an Instagram post from a Britex Fabrics workshop. Her work is lovely! Definitely a quality piece with beautiful workmanship that made a wonderful 18th birthday present for my daughter, who loves the piece. Packaging well represented a handmade item and shipping was quick. All in all a great purchase!

About

In Stitches

I am obsessed with the intricacy of things and once spent an entire summer drawing broccoli.

Zelma Rose Handmade Goods was founded in 2010 inspired by the age old Anderson Family tradition of quality craftsmanship and glorious storytellers. Zelma Rose is known for our wanderlust inspired goods in patterns that evoke our deep love of nature. Entirely handcrafted from my own original needlework patterns, each unique Zelma Rose design is made to order in our mountainside studio right here in Fairfax, California.

I come from a long lineage of seamstresses and carpenters who believe that function + quality + artistry = beautiful design and that's the Zelma Rose way! My Great Great Grandfather was a Norwegian boat builder, my Grandfather Fa, a master carpenter and my father a master woodworker. My Great Great Aunt was a gifted seamstress and one of the first women to attend Pratt Institute for Fashion Design. She passed down a love of art and sewing to her younger sisters that was passed down to me by my Mother, and at six months old I was yielding crayons with both hands. Seriously, I'm ambidextrous!

I've had an interesting life. One filled with art and music and science. I moved out to San Francisco at the age of 20 from New York to earn my BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. I was the first one in my family to move from New York. Ever. My Mom's family dating back to my Great Great Grandparents lived in Brooklyn and my Dad's family, dating back to my Grandparents lived in Queens. After graduation I taught, and was a three time California Arts Council Artis in Residence Grant Recipient. I worked at UCSF Mount Zion Cancer Center for a while, creating art with people with cancer and painting murals. Working in a hospital setting awakened an interest in psychology and I soon went on to receive a MS in Clinical Psychology and I'm now a licensed psychotherapist, although I no longer practice.

When I sit down in my studio to design for Zelma Rose, I reference a kaleidoscope of ideas and images. As an artist, I am a hunter and a gatherer. A visual editor, a collector, a cultivator, and a farmer of ideas and design. Sometimes a design will come to fruition in a single afternoon, other times it is the careful cultivation of successes and failures over the span of a year. Many of my designs are a year in the making, when one day everything just clicks. Moments like that feel magical and remind me how much I love the mystery of the artistic process.

Collaborating with other artists and my customers is the best! I am constantly inspired by the passion and creativity of my fellow Bay Area crafters. I love collaborating with other artists on projects. There is always something new to learn in this business, whether it is a new creative skill, or playing around with a fun new photography application, and who better to learn it from than a crafty friend. I am also really inspired by my customers. It is fascinating to see how customers make Zelma Rose their own. I really enjoy opportunities like craft shows where I can speak with my customers face to face, get their feedback on new designs and hear how they are enjoying their favorite Zelma Rose pieces.

Making peace with the fact that just like I will never have the time to read all the books ever written, I will also never have to time to create every single idea that I sketch or dream about. The simple fact that there has to be an editing process of what gets cultivated to a final design and what doesn’t, can feel like the worst part. Putting the breaks on inspiration is difficult, but with a business to nurture, it is a necessary part of the process.

I really enjoy creating personalized pieces for my customers. I encourage the curious to contact me to discuss ideas for custom pieces for weddings, birthdays, and that special handcrafted gift. There is nothing like sending handmade love from San Francisco!

Additional policies and FAQs
FAQs

1)Is the item in the picture the actual item I will be receiving?

The pictures are representative of the piece(s) you are purchasing. I make every effort to make the individual pieces as similar as possible to the item pictured, but because of the handmade nature of the items your piece will have some small variation that makes it unique.

2)What materials are used in Zelma Rose creations?

All needlework is created on 100% cotton fabric with cotton, wool, or silk embroidery thread. When wool is used, it is noted in the description for those who are allergic. Pendants, chains, and findings are cast and made in vintage finished brass free of nickel and lead.

3)How do I care for my Zelma Rose creations?

People from all walks of life wear Zelma Rose creations. From everyday fashion statements to a unique piece for a wedding or special occasion to on stage in the theater, be inspired! Kindly remember that fabric and thread are sensitive to the elements. I recommend taking items off when showering, swimming or sleeping. If possible, keep your items in an airtight container (a Ziploc bag works just fine) as this will keep them safe and cozy.

4)Do you do custom orders?

YES! I love to do custom work, it's so exciting! Contact me and we can discuss creating something truly curious just for you.

5)Do you accept wholesale orders?

Yes, I do. If you are interested in including Zelma Rose creations in your boutique or gallery, please visit our website or check us out on Etsy Wholesale.
