Rules for Tagging? In Dos and Don'ts?

Show Thread Summary

We can tag with the names of our photo props and the colors in our photo backgrounds.

I could go with dozens of common examples. And they are all allowed.

Where is that allowed, and why should it be? Why would you tag the colors of your photo background? That makes no sense whatsoever.

I think the bottom line with tagging is: Use words that describe the item accurately (and it DOES say this), use words that say what it IS. Otherwise, what's the point of selling here then? I always keep the customer in mind when I do my tagging b/c they are the reason I am here in the first place. Tag for your customer's sake, not b/c of the latest trends, not because of treasuries, but FOR YOUR CUSTOMER. THEY are who matter!

What I did NOT say on the minimal info on tags was a speific prohibition on tagging an item with what is is not.

should read:

What it did NOT say on the minimal info on tags was a specific prohibition on tagging an item with what it is not.

sheesh! sorry!
Astrid, my memory may be wrong, but I remember an earlier version of the rules that was more specific about the Don'ts.

Which I think was changed around the time the Merch Desk was created, since some of the suggestions every month give examples for tagging items with words and phrases that aren't about the item.

Paperika, the rules for tagging have become what an old boss of mine used to call "specifically vague". I've seen props tagged, and background colors tagged, on items in FP treasuries. I clicked on an item I saw on the FP today, and a bunch of the tags used had nothing to do with the listing. I mean, like tagging a pair of shoes with "necktie". (The item wasn't shoes or necktie, so I am not calling out.)
ElleJay, I think the treasuries that get on the front page are curated by the members, and I think sometimes members don't check to make sure their items comply with Etsy's rules.
