Shipping Solutions

We have been working on getting this Etsy thing ready to go live for weeks now, and no matter where I go I cannot find a straight answer on shipping solutions! How do I charge for shipping? I've seen other shops that are very vague and don't list prices or what kind of shipping they am I supposed to provide accurate information and know what to charge? I'm at my ropes end here, I'm frustrated and can't do this on my own! Please help!

you need to do the research and figure out your prices for your items. i wouldnt go by what others charge either, many people lose money on shipping, or figure some into item prices, and some over price shipping too
This I have done, and it's still all guesswork! What about international?
How do these other shops get away with not listing shipping prices? How does that work, is there a way the buyer choses what kind of shipping they want at check-out?
If you get a scale and weigh your items, you can compare rates from the various shipping companies and decide which one you want to use/what you need to charge. USPS usually has the best rates for small/light packages.
Your price for a shirt looks about right. I would lower the 'with another item' price, though. Of course, you may even be able to use 1st class, which would be less.

I didn't check your tags, but you need to add 'shirt' to your titles. No one is going to find your items otherwise.

Best of luck!

that calculator works for international too. and its not guesswork at all, I dont ever guess what its going to cost me to ship, I always know what it will cost

one doesnt have to list international prices at all, there is no "getting away with it". i dont list it, therefore no one out of the US can even buy from me unless they contact me first

try here, a lot of good info
But doesn't Etsy's terms and conditions say something about not being able to quote shipping prices without the buyer paying for the order? but Etsy wants me to put in shipping amounts before I even know what I'm shipping! It's all been guesswork so far and I'm just looking for a little better direction. I guess I'm just going to have to feel it out as I start to sell things.
I'm with artisan. Most of us buy a digital scale (be sure to get one with ounces). I got mine at the p.o. for about $30. Weigh each item with packaging and get the weight. Then, go to and plug in your zip code, and the furthest zip code away from you. I'm in VA, so I use a SF zip code. Select the packaging you're using, enter the weight. On the next page, expand it ("display all options") to get to the one you want. Most likely, it'll be "First Class" and it will tell you how much.

For your items, you may want to go with the Flat-rate options (no guessing), but if you use a bubble envelope or box of your own, you'll need to do this.

Because there is no way on etsy for a buyer to either indicate their zip code OR they're preferred shipping before purchase, you can always refund part of the shipping price after purchase. I've never had a problem with this.

For international, you can create charges for select countries, or "everywhere else" or ask buyers to convo you for an exact charge to a certain country. Online shoppers are savvy enough to be comfortable with this.

There are TONS of threads about shipping, and good info in the seller's handbook.
