tag question

I joined Etsy this month and am still trying to figure out the best way to navigate it. I read one article that advised to restrict tags to a single word and then I read somewhere else that it is more effective to use short phrases. Which is the most effective generally?

Short phrases that match the phrases used in your titles are the most effective.
Either is fine and some things require a phrase such as 'sterling silver'.
However, 'green, blue, purple' is not an allowed tag. It is considered tag stacking. I really don't think a phrase is anything that will get you into more searches. What I have noticed is that each word of the phrase is singled out.
So you would not need to have 'sterling silver' 'silver' and 'sterling' as three seperate tags. If you have the phrase and someone searches just sterling, you should show up.
Always, always use phrases (one that will fit) rather than single words. Just make sure they are phrases and not a jumble of words, as that's called tag-stuffing and not allowed. Hope this helps! You can use single words but phrases are better.
Short phrases are better.
Back when the default search was chronological it didn't matter, but now that search results are displayed by relevancy phrases are definitely better.

In a search for "red flower ring" a listing that has that phrase in their title and as a single tag will be more relevant than a listing that uses those words as separate tags. The trick is figuring out what phrases buyers will be searching for.
Thanks so much, this was really helpful!

Great advice from etsy experts, all in one place! You can post questions there too, if you need to.
Phrase tags will be more beneficial, because our words need to match those of the buyer when they search. Because the buyer will be specific about what they want, they will use words which state what they want and which describe it. This will require using multiple words ("pink necklace", instead of "pink" or "necklace"). Since our words need to match the buyer's words, and since the buyer will search with multiple words (phrases), this is why we need to use phrase tags.

It's my understanding that phrases cannot be random. Phrases have to be phrases that are commonly known and used.
