Planned outage? Are you kidding me?

I'm sorry, but a several hour planned outage for the full site is just ridiculous.

I get that they have built around a monolithic database structure, but with proper site architecture, there should NEVER be a need to take a full, extended outage.

At a bare minimum, this should be the LAST one, and it should be because the work they are doing is transitioning to a new architecture which will never require this.

I know the site is big, but when was the last time you saw Amazon go down for planned maintenance (for any period of time)? Or eBay? It doesn't happen, because it isn't necessary if you build correctly, with site availability as a priority.

Is there any assurance that this outage will lead to never having to take the site down again?

Well, I'll post this fast since we only have 5 minutes left:

It's been over a year since the last outage, and that's not bad! If it's another whole year, I'll be happy and I hope (and think) we'll have new toys when we come back!

Woohoo! I'm going to read a book or whatever it is people do without etsy!

See you on the flip side!
...uh...no?
Well, they feel the need to do it, they're doing it at a low-traffic time, they've clearly announced they're doing it...seems kind of silly to slam them for what you perceive as ridiculous.

Maybe if you wrote a nice note asking them to explain....
Yeah, Brandi - see you on the other side!!!

Three minutes! It's like waiting for the ball to drop!
I didn't get notified! :o
