Still Harping on the Search Results...

For three days now, I've been trying to figure out the difference between doing a search for an item using the search text box at the top of the page vs. using the Categories list on the Home page.
Maybe I haven't made myself clear, so please indulge me and let me try again.

I'll make this as simple as possible:

If I do a search from the type-in search box at the top of the page for "baby quilt", selecting the main category as "Homemade", it shows 27,928 items.

If I do a search from the links in the Categories list on the Home page, selecting, "Quilts" and then from the next page, sub-category, "Baby", it shows 11,221 items.

Where are the missing 16,707 items and why are they being omitted from the Categories search list?

The category search is ONLY showing you items that have been placed in that category by the seller. The search is showing you everything that is tagged or titled with the term "baby quilt". Someone can use the tag "baby quilt" but not use that category, hence why you are seeing more listings come up in the search. The search may also be pulling up items that are not actually quilts, but are baby items with quilting that include the term "baby quilt".

ETA: Just to clarify a little more, the category search does NOT pull info from tags and titles - it is based ONLY on the category that the seller chose when listing their item. The regular search pulls information from tags, titles, and the categories the seller has chosen.
I could be wrong, but they aren't missing.. When yo do a general search, you'll get everything with those two words. When you do a category search, you are narrowing down the search to just that category. put quote marks around baby quilt n the general search and see what happens.

General search without quotation marks around the phrase will bring up every listing with those two words, even if they aren't a baby quilt. People may busing those words as tags for other items.
I never shop with the categories, but maybe the sellers that have the 16,707 items missing in the categories can buy search ads and be found?? Is this where Etsy is leading?
sandy... hopefully you get an answer.... all I will say is if your item does NOT show up in the top search box.... you are in trouble...
BUT, if getting in the top of the side box catapults you to the top of the top search list... then you are on to something....
note that is often takes 2-3 days for all the changes to settle though you can be encouraged by early results.... hope this helps.... take with a grain of salt... big grain :)
Janine, your answer helps a lot. Thanks for the clarification.
Under baby quilt (no quotation marks) a PINCUSION came up. Why? Because the word baby is in title and quilting in tags. But it's in the Geekery category.
Janine and Laurie,
Bless you, bless you, bless you. Finally!
I guess if I ask the right question, I'll get a clear answer. Lol

I need to chew on this for a while before I ask my next question.
Thank you.

Can you elaborate on the middle part of your reply, the part that begins with"BUT..."?

I think you may be thinking along the same lines as I am... but I haven't been able to put my finger on it yet.
;-)
Sandy I know what you mean. I wrote in the bugs forums today because if I go to the search box on Etsy's home page and use the drop down menu looking for my barefoot sandals 391 show up. If I type the word barefoot sandals completely out in the search box it brings up over 5.000. I feel like a new customer would be more likely to use the drop down menu which greatly reduces the items in that category and also us as sellers views and sales.
