Just got a package returned

Well, if it was scanned by the PO, and never made it to the buyer, then the damage was obviously done by the USPS. I'd take it to the main PO in your area and talk to someone in charge.
The address is correct. The post office can't deliver a package without and address and just a name. Someone opened the box and the box is ripped and torn. It looks like someone kicked it or stepped on it.
I wrap each item in tissue paper. One of the pillow has the tissue completely off and another has it ripped open on one side. Someone was clearly inside this box.
Take the package to the post office in the same shape the it was returned to you in and see what they will do.

Chances are that the package got caught in the equipment somewhere and the address got torn.

The package was probably opened by the post office people to see if there was a packing slip inside the package so that it could be sent to its destination. Since there probably wasn't the package was sent to the only address available.
I think you might be right crochetgal. And I just stopped including packing slips inside my boxes. I guess I might want to rethink that now.
