Jewellery materials / categories

I've noticed that in rings the categories available offer sterling as well as metal / metalwork but in necklaces and pendants its just metal/metalwork. Wouldn't it make it easier if it was just 'silver' available instead of metal / metalwork.
In the pendant / necklace bit I am always confused are my solid silver items metal or metalwork?
What do others do? think?

Giving you a Bump, somethinextraspecial. Sorry; I don't know anything about Jewelry; or the correct labeling (re: silver items being "metal" or "metalwork").
It's really confusing and open to interpretation. In my mind, metal is any kind of metal, but metalwork is metal that has been worked by the artist.
I agree with you. Silver is a better description for something made in silver. Not metal. I think I would put them in metal.
I always wondered this! Why don't we have a gold and silver category for all jewelry?
I don't know what the official meanings are, but in my jewelry shop I choose metalwork if the piece involves my metalwork (sawing, forming, soldering, etc.) and I choose metal if the piece is made of metal (for example some metal beads I string) but does not involve me doing any metalwork.
Ditto, Charlene.
Metalwork to me is when you take a raw material like wire or sheet and create something totally different.

I work in copper, sterling silver and brass so to have a "silver" category take the place of metal or metalwork would not work for me!
Thats a good point Marie and I suppsoe mixed metal would then include stuff like nickel. Hadn't thought of that. Just wish it was the same all through, only really noticed it last night that it was different in earrings lol and I;ve been here nearly 4 years ;-)
