phrase tags no longer more relevant?

okay, so I'm just noticing something new in search results and I'm freaking out.

Since relevancy happened listings that had the search phrase in the title and as a single tag were more relevant than listings that had the search phrase words in separate tags. So if someone searched for a crochet hat, all the items on the first many pages had "crochet hat" in the title and "crochet hat" as a single tag.

Well, I have stopped being relevant lately, in all my searches: crochet hat, newsboy hat, earflap hat, etc. So I started doing a little detective work to figure out what is going on. Well, many relevant items no longer have those words as a single tag, but rather those words are often NOT in a single tag.

I kind of want to scream, because my season is approaching, and I'm nowhere to be found in any of my searches. So the question is: is anybody else noticing this change.

I also noticed recency being more prevalent now. I think the best we can do is diversify. Have half of your listings single words and half phrases?
I give up trying to figure these things out! Yikes!
I wanna cry right now. I really do. I can't believe that there haven't been other threads about this.

And I've listed a lot of stuff recently, and those items aren't relevant either.
That's what I think too.

They switch it back and forth. So I do some each way, that way they can't squeeeeze me out entirely on a whim.
well, I'm going to change a few and see what happens. But I don't think it's ever been like this.
I've noticed. Posted about it a few times for the reverse reason. Etsy search will pull just one word out of a 2 word tag as well. That's why I'm showing in the jewelry category.

The general response was - meh.

My personal response is: I'm building a website. I can't take the roller coaster stress anymore. This business is my livelihood too. And my mortgage company doesn't give a shit if etsy is testing to 'make things better' and it shoves me in the toilet for a week.

I have a tremendous empathy for your frustration and fear with the busy season quickly approaching, although I have no sage advice. It's the make it or break it time for many sellers....wishing you and your shop the best.
I hadn't noticed since I never check my placement, but it wouldn't surprise me if they changed it. Its a constant guessing game I think!
I am new to Etsy, but I've designed and created keywords for a lot of websites before when I was an art director for a website company... I've been paying a lot of attention to Etsy's protocol when it comes to search, and recently adjusted my items a bit better... I have a suggestion for you:

Example... your item is titled: "Alpaca Wool and Bamboo Ear flap Hat - Blue Crocheted Hat - Winter Accessories"

To come up in search, I'd change it to "Blue Alpaca Wool Crocheted Hat with Bamboo Ear Flap - Winter Accessories"

The relevancy for search is also what you first list in your title... think like a customer. If I was looking for a new winter hat, I would first think of the color I wanted, then the material, then the style...
"black wool peacoat" ... "purple leopard knitted scarf"

I noticed in my stats that most people found me by searching "wire wrapped shell pendant", but I wasn't showing up on the first or second pages when I tried to search for it myself. Then I changed the titles around a bit, and suddenly BAM! I was on the very first page.

Hope that helps :)
etsy just flipped the script and this is so upsetting.
