Does accepting paypal mean accepting credit cards too?

huh. I think thats the problem then - since she'd never heard of paypal or even knew what it was, she assumed it was just another credit card like the others listed (afterall, the way the site shows it, you'd be led to believe you can use Visa/Mastercard/Paypal/Discover...etc... and you dont need to have a Discover card to make a Visa purchase...) I think if a credit card payment still requires a paypal account, some rewording is necessary on the site, because that's very confusing.
laughingstarfish,
it sounds like your buyer was very very inexperienced in online shopping. (she'd never heard of paypal??)

Etsy includes the credit card logos next to PayPal because PayPal allows users to make a payment through them via debit, credit or bank account.

On the subject of PayPal accounts...
I've had experience with both kinds of PayPal accounts when selling on ebay. (the standard account is free to receive payments that are not made with credit cards. The premiere and biz accounts charge I think 3% per transaction + 30cents.)

I have to tell you, it was a friggin NIGHTMARE having a free regular PayPal account. I would clearly state in 2 places and again on the invoice that I could ONLY accept PayPal transactions that were linked to a debit card or bank account, I could NOT accept PayPal payments that were linked to a credit card.

95% of the buyers ignored this. which meant many frustrating emails back and forth. sometimes I had to then wait 2 weeks to receive a money order as an alternate payment. sometimes I had to relist an item after a "sale" because they buyer couldn't pay any other way.

I consider it worth the extra fees for a premiere paypal account.
I know that you're supposed to be able to "take credit cards through PayPal" with your own website and the buyer isn't supposed to have to register with them.

But I also know that you *can't* do that with eBay.

I don't know for sure about Etsy. But I know when I just paid for something from Etsy, I went to the PayPal screen and it said something like "If you don't already have a PayPal account, sign up here" or some such, so it sounds to me like you need to register.

Frankly, it's been so long that since I didn't have a PP account, that I'm completely clueless about the process when you're not registered. :-)
yes, my buyer is one of those technophobe types that is very frustrating to give tech support to.

The difference with etsy versus ebay is that Etsy actually puts payment accepted creditcard/paypal which can easily be interpretted to mean credit card OR paypal (in fact, even I am reading it that way - last I checked thats what "/" meant....
There's just not a way to customize the wording for the payment types here as there is in other forums, and I'd love to be able to just say paypal account if you have one or money order only. the credit card stuff is misleading.
Ah, well as to the either/or thing, I've already had that discussion elsewhere on the forums. I have a merchant account of my own and would love to use it...but can't. (without going through hoops, anyway)

So, I think, in Etsy-ese, the "/" means credit cards via PayPal. :-)
Okay I'm gonna chime in here.. you *do not* have to have a paypal account these days to purchase... if you click tha tbutton saying you don't have an account, it takes you to a page that asks for your shipping address, then it takes you to a page that asks you to enter your creditcard info, an email address for receipt, phone number, and a stupid "type what you see in the box" thing to guard against bots filling the form... I believe when you're done you can choose to create an account, but that it's not necessary.

When you are listing your items, isn't there an "other" option in the payment section? If there is, then you could probably choose that and describe it in your item description.
StoryBlox, thanks so much for clarifying that. very helpful to know.

laughingstarfish, manndra... between your two av's I get the distinct feeling that I'm beeing peeked at. :)
dyno :)

as for the other comments: thanks all - I think I've learned that not only do I already have a business account, (wasn't sure but on further investigation that does appear to be the case) but I'm fairly sure that my customer is a particularly internet-challenged one ;)

Thanks everyone, for clearing it all up for me - in the meantime, I got to learn something new! I didn't realize you don't need paypal to purchase through it.
