says my new username is taken, but I know it's NOT!!

I tried to set up a new account yesterday. I chose a VERY original name, but even still, I did a search for it on etsy, even googled it, and NO ONE has this name. So I try to set up a new account and when I get down to where it says USERNAME I enter it and it says username is already in use. How can that be? I tried re doing it to no avail. Has anyone had this happen? I've emailed etsy but haven't heard back yet.

If a shop is taken but does not show up in search it just means that the person who has the name has not officially opened their shop yet. More like reserved the name for a future shop.
It could be a name that someone used in the past but closed their account. Once the name has been used, it cannot be used again.
Michelle - I never knew that once a name was used and even tho a shop closed you can never use that shops name. Thanks for that new info.

Yes, I also agree it could be reserved for a shop that IS opening, or a shop owner who is already on Etsy, but going to open a second shop in the future.
Yes, it could be an account that was once active but has since been closed, or one that is currently in use but doesn't appear "live" because the shop isn't open yet.

Sorry, OP.
I would totally get that if not for the fact that this name is so original. It seems there should be an etsy page you can go on and type in a name and have it say whether it's taken or not, before you get to the sign up page. And while I'm venting here...I don't think they should call it USERNAME because that's a little confusing to a newbie, they should make it very clear that this is going to be your SHOP NAME. When I first opened my etsy shop years ago I put my name in that slot thinking there would be another field to enter in my shop name. Just saying :)
I so agree with the shop name/user name thing... had that been the case I'd have a different shop name.

You actually can change the shop name now, but keep the username the same.

Use this link

and put the name you chose at the end and it'll most likely come up as a buyer account. But it could also be someone that has closed their account as someone mentioned above.

I can't remember how many accounts there are on Etsy now, but it's way into the millions now. It's getting to the point that it'll have to be a random selection of letters and numbers to be truly original. It's way, way more likely to have already been used than an error.
Don't feel bad... When I was setting up shop, My OWN name was already being used!
I just came up with another name on the fly, and it seems to work for me. Even my close friends are calling me Mountain Girl now. LOL
Sometimes a name isn't as unique as you'd think. My last name is a misspelling of a German name. You would think that my name would be unique but there are at least 4 Jennifer Schildts that I know of.

It is likely that the name has already been registered. Whether or not it was ever used, who knows.
Thanks for all the advice ladies <3 I'll just have to come up with an even better...and more original one!
