Coming soon: Improvements for digital download items

Hi Etsy Sellers:

For sellers offering digital download items, stay tuned for some improvements coming your way! We’re introducing a new way to manage digital item listings so that you can spend less time emailing attachments, and more time creating. We’ll be rolling out the new option over the next few days, and everyone should have access by the end of this week.

What’s new:

Instead of having to manually email files to a customer after purchase, this new option will allow buyers to instantly download their files after the payment successfully processes. This time saving feature will also help to reduce confusion about whether your item is a finished good.

To check if you already have access to this new feature: Go to your Listings page, select a listing to edit, and check if "Digital file" is available as an item type. If it is, upload your file and that’s it!

We’ll post to the Etsy News Blog in the coming days when the new features are available for all sellers. In the meantime, you can find more information in our FAQ here www.etsy.com/help?ref=si_help#/digital

Had a chance to try this new feature? We want to hear your thoughts!

Thanks!

Are there any size restrictions for file uploads? Some of my custom digital invitation designs can get fairly large since they have to be high resolution for printing. Can you also upload more that one file to a listing, or can it only be one file? I'm sure this information is somewhere, I didn't join the prototype team though so now I'm curious if this would work with my shop and the types of files I deal with....

Hi Rozena,

Thanks for your question! You can upload up to 5 files per listing, with a file size limit of 20MB for now.

This is terrific! Although I don't have digital files for sale, I can imagine how easy this will make it for both parties.

I have a few questions.

1) Will this show on the receipt as having been downloaded by the buyer. Sort of like a tracking number?

2) Does the buyer get an unlimited amount of time to be able to download, and/or once it's downloaded can the buyer download again, or is one time - that's it?

3) What if there are more than 5 items that are purchased?

Hi Terre,

1. You can check on the Sold Orders page whether the order has "No files downloaded", "Some files downloaded" or "All files downloaded". You can see which specific files has been downloaded for the order on the order's Downloads page.

2. After purchasing a digital item, you will be able to access it from your Downloads page at your own convenience. We want to be flexible with buyers who might forget to download it or might need to download again.

3. Can you clarify what you mean?

Thanks!

This feature is great for those of you who don't mind the small upload limit, or the unlimited access people will have to download your files. I still can't personally jump on board with this feature unfortunately.

For my needs 20mb is not enough, and I also don't like that I can't implement a download limit. With crafthub I am able to upload 50MB and I can limit how many times my files are accessed. Digital pirating is rampant these days. If I were to use Etsy downloads there is no stopping anyone from sharing the link and distributing my files to whomever they wish. For instance with crafthub I limit each purchase to 3 downloads max.

Will you guys be addressing these issues for Etsy downloads?

Hi Sonya,

The download link only works while the buyer is signed into the Etsy account they made the purchase from.
bcheri from PieceByNumberQuilts:

Are there extra fees associated with using this new feature, or will there be in the future? And if so, how will it work?

Kinda hard to believe that Etsy would be willing to store huge digital files and pay the bandwidth for customer downloading for free.

Hi there,

There are currently no extra fees for listing digital items. You can review our fees policy here: etsy.com/help/article/2144.

The beta team is here www.etsy.com/teams/15225/digital-items if you're interested in the service, you can read what many of us said and asked during the testing phase.
Love love love this feature.
Best thing Etsy ever added!
I don't have it yet but look forward to it.
