Ebay vs. Etsy

For those of you who do both...

Which costs the most to list and sell?
Which is the most trouble to list, sell, get paid and ship?
Do you list the same item on Ebay that you have listed on Etsy?
Which do you sell the most items on?
What percent of people don't pay for a purchased item on Ebay?
Do you price your items the same on Etsy and Ebay?
Do you build up repeat customers on Ebay like do on Etsy?
If money were no object (HA!) and you had only one choice, which would it be?

What am I missing here?

Thanks for your input!

This is pretty much my answer, except I pay for an ebay store (49.99/mo), and I sell more there than here.

I've sold on ebay since 1999, and seen a lot of changes there.
Translate
My reply is the same as Kathys but I change my prices on ebay , sometimes I charge more sometimes less. Some months I get more ebay buyers some months more etsy buyers.
I feel ebay is my standby when something does not get noticed or sold on Etsy. I am happy to be able to sell on both.
I also sell non vintage on ebay.

continued : I do NOT sell on their auction only BUY IT NOW.
They have a very fast and good customer service and I love that they help with the listing titles.

I sell on both.
I started here.
I sell higher dollar (much higher dollar) items there.
It is easy to list there.
There is no listing fee.
The fvf is 6.5% higher.
Shipping is easier.
I've had one person not pay and I didn't do a thing, they took care of it for me automatically, got my fvf back and just relisted it.
I price pretty much the same or a bit more there, but the items are different, usually.
I don't build up customers much, but if I specialize I think I will.
I don't want to have to choose. I sell quickly there usually.
They have superb customer service. They call me periodically to discuss how I can increase sales, and whenever I've had a problem, I call them and it's resolved in minutes.

But I love having my shop here.

I should explain my comment left a few day's ago regarding ebay and the people that sell on ebay.
This was certainly not meant to be a personal affront at you and I am so sorry it came off like that. I sold on ebay about 10 years ago or not long after they opened their internet doors. I was selling there for a few years till the billing system became too complex. I was also a buyer. TBC

Continued, I would want to purchase an item and would place a bid. Always the highest! But at the last moment I would be outbid! Then I would go back to the same seller (or get an email) telling me that the very same item has been relisted! So this left and bad taste for me with ebay and I finally gave up! So PLEASE don't think this was about YOU! Just the whole ebay situation with me personally.

I am not the kind of person who would peg someone for what they are not and I know that there are mostly sellers with high standards but as in life there are too many that just don't share those same standards.
Please accept my public apologies and know it wasn't regarding you.

Thanks, Sandy! That was sweet.

I never had anything like that happen on Ebay. Been there since 1998.

Which costs the most to list and sell?

Depends on if you sell auction style or bin on Ebay and if you have or can create many multiples of an item. Ebay you can get free listings. If you list a BIN item for free with a quantity of 30 and all 30 sell you paid no insertion fees and on Etsy that would have cost 6.00. So, it depends.

Which is the most trouble to list, sell, get paid and ship?

Easy to list on Ebay with no concern of tags or SEO. Their search feature works on titles and description. You can edit your pics right there when you load them to Ebay so ebay for easier to list. I list BIN with immediate payment required usually so no problems there. Don't worry about non paying buyers on auctions - file a NPB and relist. Shipping...I use Ebay to create and print my labels just as on Etsy - no difference.

Do you list the same item on Ebay that you have listed on Etsy?

I have. Right now all except digital are on Ebay.

Which do you sell the most items on?

Ebay...by far.

What percent of people don't pay for a purchased item on Ebay?

See above.

Do you price your items the same on Etsy and Ebay?

No. But that is because in previous years of selling on Ebay I had a lower price point to start with than when I came to Etsy and developed a customer base that buys in quantity...10-50 items at a time. Since I offer "free shipping" those multiple item sales offset the lower price and I make my money.

Do you build up repeat customers on Ebay like do on Etsy?

Absolutely. Many of mine are repeat customers (I hope I can get them back now) that I had a nice relationship with.

If money were no object (HA!) and you had only one choice, which would it be?

Ebay. That is where the sales come for me. Jewelry isn't as saturated and my packaging, pricing and customer service stand above a lot of the other sellers bringing me repeat business.

Thanks for all the info! I haven't sold on ebay for yonks - I jumped ship when they made all the changes. Thinking of trying again, maybe...

Well said Cheri!

How is zero more than twenty cents?
Translate
I pay .30 to list there. If I had a store I would not pay a listing fee but a monthly store fee. They also take 10% when the item sells. For that reason I list for a little more.
Translate
eBay charges 10% of the total sales plus the listing fee unless they run a special--plus they charge this on shipping cost as well.

etsy charges 20 cents to list plus 3.5% and do not charge on the shipping cost

You will have added PP costs (or DC on etsy) also but that runs about the same on both venues

I used to sell on eBay but sales dropped to almost zero % for me so I quit there.

I sell much more here. (Probably the nature of my "Goods".)

Everyone pays on both sites because I have it set up that way (I don;t tkae checks., MO'S) They pay when they buy.

Yes, I had repeat customers on eBay. Some moved over here with me

I no longer sell on eBay since I was literally wasting my time listing..

Translate
First fifty listings are free on ebay.
Translate
Yes, but they constantly tell us that is a "special"--even tho it has been a "special" for a couple years now, at least! :-)
Translate
Well, I don't count things I don't pay for.
Translate
Doesn't matter to me--if it sits there for 30 days and does not get one single view then it is not worth my time to even sit here and do the listing. My time can be better spent making something to list here.

but that is just me.
Translate
So for anyone with an inventory of more than 50, they have listing fees
Translate
Ebay costs more to list, more in sales commission, takes me longer in time, has more 'breakages' and 'not yet recd', has more non-payers and is a bit aggressive and combatative.

I do list on both, at different prices (only because I can't always remember the other price)

Etsy is much more friendly and easier to use.

My main concern is Etsy keeps changing and I wonder if it will eventually go the same way as Ebay, which will be awful. Or, get bought up by Ebay which would be even worse.

I would love to use only Etsy, but needs must etc.

I would think with what you sell your items will sell better here. Handmade seems to sell better on etsy. (With a very few exceptions)
