Please Explain "Pay It Forward"

Hello All,

I was wondering if someone could please explain how "Pay It Forward" works? I understand the general concept (read the book, saw the movie), but am unsure of how it works here on Etsy. It seems like a really great, positive idea, but I'd like to understand the ins & outs & rules (if any) before I jump in.

Thank you!

The idea is that you offer a listing for free (some people just do discounts, but I think it should be totally free, without even a shipping charge) and then the person who buys it either puts up a PIF in their own shop or does something nice for someone in the real world. I've done a couple of them, but I'm not sure how it works now that they changed how checkout works.

Sadly, lots of people say something is a PIF when really it's just on sale.
Thanks, Tissage!

I agree, I always thought it was supposed to be totally free (including shipping).

Good point about the new checkout. Would be interested to know how that works in this situation.
Etsy doesn't regulate them, so people can really do whatever they want. There was a thread earlier about flagging PIFs that aren't really PIFs but I don't think that does anything.
Anyone else ever done a PIF?
I've "purchased" a 'pif' along with other things I bought from the same seller, and it made me so so happy. I payed it forward by calling back the lady who hit me at a stop sign and finally telling her not to worry about it, my car would be fine with a couple unrepaired scratches.

I told her to pay it forward too :)
I just "sold" my first pay it forward aka PIF I really enjoyed it. It made me feel like i was giving back. all you have to do is make a listing have other as a payment option put at least .20 but let them know not to pay that and tell them to check other as payment and you will ship it out to them. It is really simple. Good luck!!!
I have my first PIF up for sale in my shop. You have to enter at least .20 in order to list it. Etsy won't let you list anything for free :P
Thanks, everyone, that helps!

I just searched "Pay It Forward", & can't believe how many items have "PIF" as a tag that clearly aren't PIF. That's not in the spirit of things! It makes me absolutely NOT want to buy anything from those shops! Don't they believe in karma?

Right. It used to be that we would say in the listing to checkout but not pay, but if you only take Paypal you couldn't do that with the current checkout. So I guess people must be paying that 20 cents.
