Undisclosed connection and data-sharing between Etsy and Facebook?

Etsy, why is there a direct connection between users of Etsy who also have a FB account - but have purposely kept them separate? Separate e-mail addresses, no Etsy apps, have not 'liked' Etsy's FB page, nothing.

Seems that if Etsy users are also logged in to Facebook, an undisclosed and unauthorized connection is made between the two accounts.

An example (excerpt) from GoTo:

~~~My etsy email address is from my domain which, like you, in accessible to either friend-finder search-Etsy's or Facebooks.
I also use a different email address on Etsy than I do for non-business registrations (like facebook), yet when I go to the gifts page from Etsy's buy page, three of my FB friends that have Etsy accounts show up there.
The first time I checked I didn't have that happen, but the last time I checked it did.
I have not authorized these sites to share info amongst themselves. I have all the highest settings on Facebook I can have about sharing my private data.
_____
Also from GoTo:
I don't know how it all works...
In order for Etsy to access your email address book, you must click a specific link then give Etsy permission to access your contacts for one-time use according to Etsy, and if you want to use it again you are supposed to need to re-permit the access.
I have opted out of the email address search & never put my name in my profile.
I have never used the friend finder feature on either site.
How did they connect me to my FB friends?
And this:
GoTo says
I use a different email address on Etsy, so I don't see how... I made a point of keeping FB just for social, non-business purposes but Etsy invaded my personal fb account in some way to produce those results.
My friends do not know the email address in my Etsy account, so they couldn't have used that to link me, I just don't get it.
__________
Etsy, why is this happening? What kind of data-sharing is going on between Etsy and FB? Why haven't users been notified of this? How can users opt-out - and why were they opted-in in the first place?
This is unacceptable. And alarming, to say the least.
Add this to the mounting concerns over member privacy on this site.
Let me clear up a few things, as there is a bit of misinformation in this thread. In response to the OP, when you use Etsy’s Gift Ideas feature, and log-in to Facebook, Etsy can only access information that your friends have chosen to make publicly available on Facebook. You may not be able to use the Gift Ideas tool for some friends if they have chosen to keep their Facebook information private or do not have much information on their Facebook profile.
That’s why you’ll see the number of friends that you can access for this tool change, as they have either changed their privacy settings (on Facebook) to allow them to be accessed by this tool or they have added more info to their profile that provides us with enough info to populate some gift ideas for them. Simple as that really.
It has nothing to do with your email address or the Friend Finder tool. More info on our Help Site here:
UHM WTF YOU GUYS.
I just went to check my Facebook/Etsy interaction again (still nothing) and while logged in, I decided to check my Facebook apps. Facebook is telling me I APPROVED the Etsy app to access my account LESS THAN 24 HOURS AGO. The last app I approved was Artfire, and I think that was on Friday.
I don't even know what to say right now. I'm logging off Etsy for awhile. I have things to do and can't worry about this right now. But this is beyond wrong.
Hey 1HandWashesTheOther,
If you used the Gift Ideas tool or clicked the “share your new listing on facebook” link and authorized us to connect with Facebook, it will show when you last used the Etsy app. You can edit the settings - OR- completely remove permission by clicking the x on the right. (Note that on this list, Etsy is separate from the My Etsy application.) More info here:
GreenMamba, seriously, you deserve a medal.
I salute you.
I'm confused. If the domain address is used for *both* etsy and facebook's friend finders, then that suggests to me to be the reason for Etsy having access to the fb friends.
Could you clarify what you mean by this?
Oh yes...very interesting question here. Marking!
let's see what is really happening...
hoping to follow and understand
This is Facebook's policy regarding apps.
"On Facebook, your name, profile picture, gender and networks are visible to everyone (Learn Why). Also, by default, apps have access to your friends list and any information you choose to share with everyone.
You can change what you share with apps using these settings:"
You have to disable all platform apps and then you won't get the connection.
The Facebook Buy page connection is completely different than the email address thingy.
On the Buy page it is not looking at email addresses through Facebook, but it is looking at your friend's Facebook interests. But it doesn't do anything if you don't click on "find gifts for friends".
Yikes! :s
Definitely of concern! Too bad we all are being tricked into living in a fishbowl by corporate America.
I took away all of my info on facebook, all interests, links, birthday, etc. I have high privacy settings too... and no spam & very few advertisements (none that I ever click on, so I think they've given up).
You might try this too.
