Seems that if Etsy users are also logged in to Facebook, an undisclosed and unauthorized connection is made between the two accounts.
An example (excerpt) from GoTo:
~~~My etsy email address is from my domain which, like you, in accessible to either friend-finder search-Etsy's or Facebooks.
I also use a different email address on Etsy than I do for non-business registrations (like facebook), yet when I go to the gifts page from Etsy's buy page, three of my FB friends that have Etsy accounts show up there.
The first time I checked I didn't have that happen, but the last time I checked it did.
I have not authorized these sites to share info amongst themselves. I have all the highest settings on Facebook I can have about sharing my private data.
Also from GoTo:
I don't know how it all works...
In order for Etsy to access your email address book, you must click a specific link then give Etsy permission to access your contacts for one-time use according to Etsy, and if you want to use it again you are supposed to need to re-permit the access.
I have opted out of the email address search & never put my name in my profile.
I have never used the friend finder feature on either site.
How did they connect me to my FB friends?
I use a different email address on Etsy, so I don't see how... I made a point of keeping FB just for social, non-business purposes but Etsy invaded my personal fb account in some way to produce those results.
My friends do not know the email address in my Etsy account, so they couldn't have used that to link me, I just don't get it.
Etsy, why is this happening? What kind of data-sharing is going on between Etsy and FB? Why haven't users been notified of this? How can users opt-out - and why were they opted-in in the first place?
This is unacceptable. And alarming, to say the least.
Add this to the mounting concerns over member privacy on this site.
