Coming Soon: Change Your Shop Name and Changes to How We Represent Shops and People

Hi shop owners,

As you may have already noticed if you clicked the Coming Soon link in the header, we are going to increase your visibility as a shop owner across the site and release the ability to change your shop name! Instead of being just a username/shop name, shop owners will be represented as a person who owns a shop. Shop owners can enter their full name, if they choose to, which will be displayed with their shop name and link when they participate in Forums, Teams and other areas of the site. We plan to launch these changes on October 18, 2011.

There are a few reasons we're making these changes.

1. Currently, the fact that a username/shop name represents a person and a shop can cause confusion. If you click on a username (which is also a shop name), it can be unclear if you'll end up on the shop homepage or the shop owner's profile page. One example of this is the username/shop name link at the top of the sidebar on listing pages, which currently links to the shop owner's profile. As a part of these changes, we will update listing page so the shop name, which links to the shop homepage, is called out at the top of the sidebar, with information about the shop owner displayed below.

2. Shop owners want to promote their shop wherever they go on Etsy (like in the forums!). Currently, when you participate in Forums or Treasury, it isn't immediately clear if you own a shop. By separating the shop name and username, we can represent you as a person who owns a shop and give your shop more visibility.

3. The ability to change your shop name is a hugely requested feature. By separating the person from the shop, we can clearly represent people and shops and enable shop name changes. Starting on October 18th, you can change your shop name if you wish!

We know there will be questions and we hope the blog post (www.etsy.com/blog/news/2011/names-and-shops-on-etsy/) answered many of them, but here are a few additional questions we wanted to cover:

Q: What are you doing to make sure people know about these changes?

A: We know these are big changes and we wanted to make sure as many people as possible know about the changes. We are sending an email to all members that includes a heads up about these changes (expect to receive this email this week). The next time you sign in, we will display an overlay that communicates the changes and provides a live preview of how you and your shop will be represented. You can also access the overlay by clicking the Coming Soon link in the header.

Q: What if I participated in Forums, Treasury, or a Team Discussion in the past and I don't want my full name associated with my old forum posts or treasuries?

A: Don't worry! The changes to how we represent people and shops in Forums, Treasury, and Team Discussions apply going forward, which means all the treasuries and forum posts you made before October 18th, 2011 will stay as they are with your username.

Q: What about my privacy? I don’t want to use my full name!

A: You don't have to. Using your full name on Etsy is always a choice. You can remove your full name and be represented with your username by going here: www.etsy.com/your/profile or clicking the Coming Soon link in the header. You also have a choice with how you use your full name. You can use your first name, last name, initials, or a nickname.

Q: Do I have to change my shop name? Or claim my current shop name? Can someone use my shop name?

A: You don’t have to change your shop name and if you want to keep your current shop name, you won't need to do anything. Starting on October 18th, members will be able to change their shop names, but will NOT be able to choose a shop name that already exists.

Q: If I change my shop name, will my username also change?

A: No, when you change your shop name, your username will remain the same.

Q: Can I see examples of how my full name and shop name will appear?

A: Certainly, check out this FAQ: www.etsy.com/help/article/1295

If you have any other questions, please post in this thread.

Thanks,
Eric

It looks like, from the FAQ that I can change our name to Jill & Matt and the shop name can be properly capitalized (MysticKnotwork rather than mysticknotwork). I hope this is correct, and if so, this is a great improvement.

-----

That's correct!

"...Starting on October 18th, members will be able to change their shop names, but will NOT be able to choose a shop name that already exists...."

Hi Eric -- Thanks so much for the exciting update. I have a question.

Can one use a name that is a dormant "buying" account? In other words, a buyer or user has the name, but not a shop owner.

So can this name be used for a shop, since it is not currently associated with a shop?

Thanks for your help.

-----

When you change your shop name, you will not be able to choose another shop's name or a member's username. We made this decision to avoid potential confusion caused by a person having a username that is the same as some else's shop name.
Lesbijouxcrealune says

Hi Eric,

By changing my shop name will my url to my shop change automatically? I'm asking because I just got another 1000 business cards made and am wondering if people will still be able to find me with my original shop name even if I choose to change it.

-----

When you change your shop name, your shop will have a new URL. Links to your previous shop URLs will continue to work and redirect to your new shop URLs. We use 301 redirects to help maintain your search engine rankings after the change.
chriswrinn says

Eric, I have a question. I am already using my real name as my shop name. I would like my shop name to be Gilded Owl Jewelry. When I looked at the way it was set up, it says: Gilded Owl Jewelry Last Name from (store icon) chriswrinn says

I need to have the store icon next to Gilded Owl Jewelry. Is there any way to do this?

-----

On October 18th, when we enable shop name changes, you can change your shop name, which is currently chriswrinn, to a new shop name. You shop name appears after the shop icon.
crochetconcepts says Edited on Oct 11, 2011

awesome!

can I merge shops then?

I have 2 shops (names), because I registered my business after my etsy shop opened. So can I close that shop which is not active and then use that name here - on my "active" account?

meaning: It states that you cannot use a name already in existence. But if I "close" that shop then wil it become "available"?

edit: ah - I see many are asking this or similar question - sorry to add to the pile but looks like a lot of us want to know.

-----

When you change your shop name, you can't choose another shop's name, even if the shop is closed.

When we launch the ability to change your shop name, there won't be a way to change to a shop name you registered under a different account.

However, we know this is very important to some people and we are looking into supporting this. We'll keep you updated.
LaBeq says

Yeah, apparently I just accidentally submitted a request to have my full name changed from "Beqi" to "Beqi Last Name". Any way I can cancel that request? I don't want my last name listed, but if it was, I would rather have MY last name than just the words Last Name!

-----

Sorry about that! There is a bug in some browsers that causes the place holder text (e.g. last name) to get submitted if you don't clear it out. We are going to push a fix for that shortly and we will update all pending name change requests to remove Last Name or First Name if they were accidentally submitted before we review them.
visibility says

This is great news! Thank you so much! Any chance our new name will be able to have more than 20 characters?

-----

We do not currently plan to increase the shop name 20 character limit or to allow spaces.
AshlynDesign says

I LOVE the new name change feature!! I was wondering though...is this a one time only thing that needs to be done in a certain time frame, or something we can do a few times (if needed) and over the lifetime of our shops being actively open?

-----

You can change your shop name one time. Changing the casing does not count as a name change. If you need to change your shop name a second time, you can submit a request to change your shop name.
LadybugLimited says

Does this mean I have to worry about claiming LadybugLimited if I'm already ladybuglimited or are the two still the same?

-----

You don't need to worry about claiming different casing variations, they're all the same shop name. However, you can change the casing of your shop name if you wish.
weezieduzzit says

Ericds, is there a timeframe (even a loose one?) on when a shop owner will be able to manage multiple shops under one account? I'm holding off listing a lot of merch because of the limited number of shop sections. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it to wait until the new feature is rolled out.

I know this was a necessary step to allowing that to happen so I figured it can't hurt to ask....

-----

Hi,

You're right that this was a necessary step to enable managing multiple shops with one account.

At this point, we don't have a time frame for when you would be able to manage multiple shops with one account.
BlackStar says

Ack! Why is my shop title above my shop announcement now? I hope this isn't permanent. It looks awful!

-----

This will be back to normal shortly.
birdsandbeadstore says

Hi Eric,

Thanks for all the info! I have a question though, will we be allowed to wait a couple of months to decide on a shop name change? or do we have to make our decision for the 18th? It makes more sense to me to have more time to think about a new name and also to use up printed marketing with our original shop name before the big change :)

-----

Once we launch the ability to change your shop name, you can change your shop name one time whenever you want.

If you need to change your shop name again, you can submit a request. We limit the number of shop name changes because frequent shop name changes could confuse shoppers or be used by people trying to take names out of the pool of available names.
saburkitty says Edited on Oct 11, 2011

I still want to know if sales and feedback will reset to zero?

-----

When you change your shop name, you won't lose any sales, feedback, or other data. All of your data will remain connected to your shop.
rabbittude says

I am not misreading mine at all. It says "rabbittudefrom says". That is exactly the way it reads. I am hoping that is a typo, but that is the way it is.

-----

Sorry about that, it looks like there's a bug affecting the preview of how you'll appear in the overlay in some browsers. That should be fixed shortly and you can see a preview of how people and shops will be represented in this FAQ: www.etsy.com/help/article/1295
oktak says

Question for Eric - what if I want to show my first name, but not my last name?
Is there an option to show your first name only? Or is it your full name or nothing?

-----

That's fine! You can just leave the last name field blank.
itsmythingdesigns says

Are there fees involved in changing your shop name? I saw a non-Etsy post today that stated there will be a 75 cent change to change it and that it would need to be updated every 3 months. This post also stated that every time someone types your shop name there would be an additional 20 cent charge to your account. Kind of like a reverse click through. Could you please clear this up?
Thanks bunches :D

-----

There are no fees associated with changing your shop name.

One more question, Eric:

You say our current shop url's will redirect. Perfect!
(Five years of promoting would have become worhtless if it didn't.)
BUT: there was an earlier redirect! Will it redirect the redirected url?

My example: my business cards, blog links, etc., all say 'BeaG.etsy.com". Short and to the point.
Etsy then made it www.etsy.com/shop/BeaG, but BeaG.etsy.com still works.
Will it still work with the new url?

So, will 'username.etsy.com' redirect to 'www.etsy.com/shop/shopname'?
If not, a lot of us Etsy sellers will be in big trouble!

-----

username.etsy.com and newshopname.etsy.com will both redirect to

www.etsy.com/shop/newshopname
thecottagepath says

Good Morning. Just a little 'confusion' about the 'username' and 'shopname' .......several times it has been said that the 'username' cannot be changed. So are you saying that when we CHANGE OUR SHOPNAME...we will STILL SIGN IN with our USERNAME ????

-----

When you change your shop name, you will continue to sign in with your email or username.
EllensClayCreations says

Eric... I am posting again in the hopes you or someone can help me with the below questions....

I am one of the unfortunate souls whose username and shop name don't match, and cause great confusion to shoppers. I chose my username based on my former website. What I am hoping and praying with these changes is that my full name will be displayed with the shop name in lieu of the username? Is that correct? I hope so. In other words, it would appear Ellen Daly with Painted Seasons. I will of course still sign in with my username, but will it appear anywhere else? If I change to my full name, I can still keep Painted Seasons, my shop name.....if all the above is correct, you just made my day:)

-----

Your username and shopname are both currently: EllensClayCreations

Right now you could change your full name to Ellen Daly. On October 18th, you can change your shop name and at that point, you would be represented as Ellen Daly from NewShopName.

You can see how you will be represented in a variety of contexts here:

WhimsicalFantasies says Edited on Oct 12, 2011

drumchick99 says

So we can't change our username? I think that's what has been requested, not an extra shopname.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That is what I was thinking. I just wanted to get rid of "WhimsicalFantasies" altogether. Granted this is not a shop, but I was thinking of reopening it. But I wont if 'WhimsicalFantasies' will still be visible on the shop page and everywhere else on the site. The name no longer has any meaning or reference to me or what I do.
-----
If you want to get rid of WhimsicalFantasies, you can enter a full name (remember if can be just your first name, initials, etc.) and change your shop name on October 18th.
If you make those changes, the only place WhimsicalFantasies will appear is in the URL of your profile page: www.etsy.com/people/WhimsicalFantasies
When these changes go live, username (or full name if you add one) will represent you as a person and your shop name will represent your shop.
You can see how you and your shop will be represented across the site here: www.etsy.com/help/article/1295
"We will increase your shop's visibility by displaying your full name..."
This comment was posted by admin in several places and is also in the 'coming soon' info box.
Several times it's been asked what exactly this means. It sounds like we're being told to add our full name or else.... And then, with this question being totally ignored multiple times, this reinforces the thought that we have to or else.
Could admin please adress this question? Will shops who chose to add their full name enjoy increased exposure over shops who chose not to?
-----
Hi,
Here's the relevant snippet from the first post in this thread:
"Shop owners want to promote their shop wherever they go on Etsy (like in the forums!). Currently, when you participate in Forums or Treasury, it isn't immediately clear if you own a shop. By separating the shop name and username, we can represent you as a person who owns a shop and give your shop more visibility."
The increased visibility is from separating the shop name and username, and displaying your shop name with a shop icon, that links to your shop homepage, when you participate on Etsy.
Adding a full name doesn't provide any extra exposure.
BeaG says
WashableArt says:
"Hey wow, BeaG: I didn't realize that realname.etsy.com would work! That's kind of cool. Although I guess it won't work if there are 2 or more of us with the same name, which could happen. Hm. Anyway, it would be a nice option for business cards -- very personal/friendly."
I'm kind of wondering now whether it will lead to our shop page, or to our profile page.... I think we have to check this one with Eric.
ERIC, WILL realname.etsy.com REDIRECT TO OUR SHOP PAGE??
-----
No.
username.etsy.com and shopname.etsy.com redirect to your shop homepage.
Hi all,
We will launch these changes this afternoon EDT.
We'll keep you updated as we get closer to launching.
WooHoo!! Got my avatar all ready! But here's a question: do we have to change all of our sales tax info from state & local areas?
Great Thanks!
