As our eleventh wedding anniversary comes up this weekend, I realized this morning I've known this fellow, Walt for as long as I have been married to Jen. His character and demeanor, his perspective and role in the world have remained miraculously intact through all of the catastrophic changes to the world around him. He has been a dear friend and one of the most durable people I have ever known... and I made him up completely. There are certain characters who slowly emerge from the ether slowly coming into focus as if walking towards you out of a thick fog and those that birth themselves fully formed. Walt did this latter bit like gangbusters, and the entire world being brought to earth for my forthcoming graphic novel from Scholastic's excellent Graphix! imprint spins about him like the orbits of a solar system. Our arguments with each other are epic, and I even miss him when I'm not working on the book. For all the schizoidal qualities of contending with this character, the rewards have never been as rich and enduring. I suspect that Walt, this shadowy little old man in a child's body, will haunt my days until their very end.

At least I hope so.
