In Montessori primary classrooms, children as young as 4 or 5-years-old may receive lessons in the functions of parts of speech. I designed this Article Box as part of a series in a child's first introduction to grammar, appropriate for lessons within a Montessori Primary or Lower Elementary classroom, or your home. Even very young children are curious about our language and the function of words; this lessons capitalizes upon a child's sensitive period for language-acquisition.

Maria Montessori, a pioneer in early childhood education, associated different shapes with each of the parts of speech. Nouns (persons, places, or things) are conceptualized as black, stable pyramids; while verbs (actions) are conceptualized as red, active balls. In two-dimensional form, a noun is a black triangle, and a verb is a red circle. All words that modify a noun are also triangles; for example, an adjective is a medium-sized, medium-blue triangle, while an article is a small, light-blue triangle. Likewise, adverbs are small, orange circles.

I have developed a complete set of "Parts of Speech" boxes (including noun, adjective, article, verb, adverb, preposition, and conjunction). In the classroom, I traditionally follow the lesson on nouns with a lesson on verbs. Articles (along with the other parts of speech) can follow.

Included in this set:
Square PAPERBOARD Box with a Painted Light Blue Triangle Top (measuring just under 4.5" x 4.5" wide and just over 2.25" tall);
16 UNLAMINATED Cards (including 8 articles and 8 nouns);
8 Light Blue and 8 Black Felt Triangles;
18 Objects (to be labeled)

Please note: Materials are an original design and cannot be reproduced for sale. Also, the items in your box may vary slightly from those shown. For example, the buttons or other objects may be a different color or pattern than in the photographs above. However, please be assured that the quality of all items will always be consistent with those shown!!! :)
ALSO, IN CONTRAST TO THE IMAGES ABOVE,THE TAGS ARE NOW UN-LAMINATED. I WOULD SUGGEST LAMINATING THEM BEFORE BEING USED HEAVILY IN THE CLASSROOM! DUE TO THE LOSS OF A SUPPLIER, THE BOX INCLUDED IN THIS SET IS NOW A SQUARE PAPER BOARD BOX (AS PICTURED IN THE SECOND PICTURE ABOVE).
