Leaf Cutter Ant Glass Sculpture Fused Glass

Leafcutter ants are fungus farmers -- they travel in long lines far into the forest, in search of leaves and use their sharp mandibles to cut leaves from plants, and then carry the large pieces of leaves over their back. A leafcutter ant can carry almost ten times its own weight
They carry the leaf pieces back to their underground nests where the leaves are chewed into a pulp. The decaying pulp is stored with ant feces and fungus spores, and strands of fungus eventually grow on the decomposing pulp.

This sculpture will be approximately 6" long, 6" wide, 5" tall (including wire legs). The ant is created out of fused glass in brick red with iridescent highlights and yellow eyes, with metal legs, metal antennae.

Original design and creation by me,
Jane Hartman
