This wonderful vintage wooden tennis racket (racquet) is a Wilson Valiant Model from the 1940s featuring Mary Hardwick, one of the great early women tennis stars. The racket has pictures of Miss Hardwick and her signature on both sides; it comes with a wooden tennis press.

The racket has some wear on the finish but no warping or splitting. The strings are tight as a drum; one is broken. The handle is tightly wrapped in leather in good condtion and bears the Wilson W on the end. The decal with Hardwick's face is in very good condition on both sides. The wooden press is in wonderful condition, with lots of spring and its original nuts.

Mary Hardwick (1913-2001) was a Londoner who won a series of international cups in the 1930s and in 1937 ranked second in Britain and seventh in the world. During the war she became a touring representative for Wilson Sporting Goods, and she continued to be active in the game, coaching, organizing matches, and playing exhibition games.

This racket would be great for a collection, for display, or for use.

Size: 27 1/4 inches long (69 cm)
