The Mexico B&W Series

No. 1 - Maria Sabina

This rare and historically significant photograph is a portrait of Mexico's most famous "curandera" (shaman) blessing a handful of psilocybin mushrooms in preparation for an occult ceremony. It was taken 1972 at her home on a mountain top near the town of Huautla de Jimenez in the Mazateca mountains of Oaxaca.

It was shot on Kodak Tri-X Pan pushed to 800 ASA. I was shooting for a Newseek journalist at the time working on a story about the "magic mushrooms".

It is the first of a series of my historic black and white photography of Mexico in the '60s and '70s.

As it must, it measures 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" and is a signed and numbered edition.

ACEOs are growing in popularity and are an excellent way to acquire and enjoy the work of artists that may otherwise be prohibitive in price. You will enjoy these convenient and attractive little works of art!
