Mervyn Peake - Author Birthday - July 9, 1911 (d. Nov. 17, 1968)

Jul 9, 2011

Gormenghast is all castles, all traditions, nearly infinite, yet completely isolated. It is the setting for the Gothic fantasy masterwork by Peake, who was also an illustrator, poet, and playwright. If you like your books dense and strange, read Peake.

And, yes, he would have been 100 today! And in honor, his family is releasing "Titus Awakes" the last of his Gormenghast writings, finished by his wife, and discovered by their granddaughter!

For daily author birthday treasuries, like me on Facebook!

An inspirational collection, thank you for including me.

I had to look this one up, as I am familiar with his illustration work, but have never read the Gormenghast books. Sounds like a trip to the bookstore for me.

Very strange and very cool. I started reading that book a couple of months ago, but had to return it to the library because I didn't finish it in time. Thanks for including our roving!

Wow! I am absolutely honoured that my Drowning Man Necklace was selected to be in this Treasury!! You know, strange as it seems, back when I was a teenager and a big fan of the Police, I read the Gormenghast books because Sting had mentioned them in some interview... of all things, right!? Now I will look into them again! Thanks sooo much!
