‘Cornflower, centaurea montana and forget-me-not' original bas relief

This ‘Cornflower, centaurea montana and forget-me-not‘ cast is a one-off original, and is handmade by me, Susan. This artwork measures 18 x 18 x 1.5cm approximately and is ready for hanging.

Botanical bas relief was widely used in the days before photography, to help botanists record details of plant species.
It has become a popular form of artwork. Most botanical plaster artists use silcone moulds, to enable them to produce multiple identical casts (often described as a 'series'), whereas I only use clay moulds, which can only be used once, thereby ensuring that every cast I make is unique.

The plants I use for my work are selected from my own garden and from the countryside around my home.
I carefully arrange the plants on a flat piece of wet clay, to create my chosen composition. Once I am happy with the arrangement, I gently press the plants into the clay to create an impression. The flowers, leaves, stems and seeds are then very carefully removed from the clay using tweezers, which leaves an indented impression in the clay, into which I pour a very fine plaster which dries very hard.
Once dry, the plaster cast shows an incredible level of detail. I hand-paint each plaster cast to complement the textures.

Every piece I make is unique. My relief signature is included on the artwork, and I also hand-sign each piece on the back.

All pieces are supplied ready to hang, and smaller pieces can also be displayed on a shelf.

The plaster is soft white in colour. This piece has been hand-painted with a subtle wash of pigment which compliments the textures of the plants.
Clean by lightly dusting with a soft dry cloth. Keep away from moisture.
