Shetland from UK and NZ, Alpaca from Peru

This classic blue snug is easy to wear. It is small with a 23.5” circumference and is approx. 9.5” deep. The warp is a fine, tweedy, rainbow-flecked Shetland wool in blue and navy, while the strong, lighter blue, alpaca weft is subtly flecked and woven in a diagonal twill pattern for a thick, cushioned cloth with a soft, alpaca facing. I wear one of these every day for about 10 months of the year, and what a difference it makes to warmth and comfort!

A word on character, fit and feel:

This one is tight to pull over my 22” head, and neatly snug but not tight around my 13” neck. The woven wool makes a chunky, robust, but not stiff, fabric. The snug is nonetheless slight enough to fit inside most jacket collars to keep the wind out. I reckon I personally have a medium tolerance of wool next to my skin – I don’t need the very softest, but nor am I comfortable in the very scratchiest. I think that the wool of this one will be soft enough from the get go for all but the sensitive. The alpaca facing gives a cool, silken feel to the smarter fabric. I’d give this one a softness rating of 4 out of 5.

Softness rating (this is relative and subjective, but here’s my own personal guide)

5 = Luxurious, for the thinnest skinned (e.g. all alpaca, merino, mohair, silk etc.; I’m making fewer and fewer of these, since the native wool of these isles doesn’t lend itself and I can’t yet afford sustainable sources)
4 = Soft, for most people (e.g. an alpaca-faced weave)
3 = Medium (e.g. Shetland, once worn in)
2 = Earthen, for the less sensitive (e.g. Shetland, before wearing in)
1 = Rugged, only for the hardy and the bearded (e.g. Harris or other fairly coarse wools, especially before wearing in)

A word on care:

To avoid felting or shrinkage, I recommend handwashing only, in cool water, with minimal agitation. Ecover Delicate Wash, or similar, will give a clean, unperfumed, soapy smell that preserves the integrity of the wool. Please note, in case of allergy, that my items come from a home with a dog, but will smell fresh.

Other words:

Because I live in a van with my loom, touring the Celtic lands, bear with me if your parcel is posted from an outer isle, Brittany or Ireland and is at all slow to arrive - I'll let you know. (My blog, 'Tales from the road', at www.theseisles.co will give you an idea of where I am currently.)

More weavings are to be listed soon. I make to order, so do write to me with your ideas and I'll respond as to whether/how I can fulfil them and advise on custom request prices (which are likely to be approximately 50% higher than stock prices).
