Austrian Linen Thread, non-waxed, 3-ply, 25g Spool, Colour of your choice
Dispatches from a small business in
Length: 90 metres
This listing is for one roll of 90m (approx 98 yards, approx. 25g) of this non-waxed Austrian 18/3 linen thread. This is the same thread that is sold on smaller reels as Londonderry thread. It is good for a broad variety of textile works, most noteworthy is embroidery on linen textiles, lace making, and crocheting.
It makes very good thread for headbands for bookbinding, too. They are dyed using traditional techniques which give beautiful, natural looking results which are light and water resistant.
18/3 is one of the standard thicknesses for bookbinding, and you will find some sellers of bookbinding supplies online who do sell this thread as a binding thread. However, do note that it is not as tightly twisted as bookbinding thread and feels softer and more floppy. When waxed it makes decent bookbinding thread but is not as abrasive resistant as the other threads I have in my shop. I would recommend to only use it for binding light and small books, for Asian stab bindings, or for decorative stitches.
I am frequently asked for the diameter of the thread. Measuring the diameter of a thread like this is difficult, because the diameter changes depending on how much pull is on the thread. Plus the thread is compressible, which messes with any measuring results. Moreover, because linen is a natural fibre with a naturally limited length (other than synthetic fibres, which can have arbitrary length, a flax fibre will never be longer than the plant was high), and thus the thickness of thread varies more or less visibly over the length of thread. All that said: When I measure with a caliper gauge, I get a 0.5mm reading for the thickness.
Generally the colors survive washing at 60°, but the thread might shrink. Pull in shape and dry under tension to prevent fabrics from warping and distorting.
You can choose your colour from a drop down menu on the right panel or by message to seller during checkout.
I am low on stock of colors marked with a star (*) in the photo. If you want to purchase more than one roll of one of those, convo me to check availablity. Usually I will be able to deliver more, but might have to check with my supplier first, and delivery times could be longer.
Colours viewed on a screen look different than the real thing. Also they vary from dye lot to dye lot. So make sure you buy enough of the thread to last you through your project since thread ordered at a different time can look significantly different.

This is a gorgeous sapphire blue. It will compliment lapis in my projects that I use this stone. A sturdy and consistent density.
Hilke the shop owner is very knowledgeable about her products. This is a beautiful pale gold color. It will work fabulously with an Autumn colors project. This linen cord has a wonderful sheen/luster. It is sturdy and a consistent density.
