Up to the 1990s it was not an unfamiliar sight to see cows grazing on the common land to the east of London and in the surrounding Epping Forest. They would often come into contact with humans when they strayed into the nearby suburbs. Here they would cause no end of consternation for homeowners and shopkeepers, frustration for motorists, wonderment and fun for children, and something to bark at for dogs.
Unfortunately, BSE brought local cattle grazing to an end in 1996.
In 2020 the City of London trialled an initiative to graze cattle in Wanstead Park. Principally to improve flora and fauna in some of the rougher grassland in the park (to reduce scrub), the cows also drew quite a crowd of onlookers young and old keen to see cattle grazing in a suburban park. They are kept in place using an electronic collar around their necks, linked to an 'invisible fencing system'. No wandering off into the traffic for these lovely ladies! Such was their success, they returned in 2021 for another spell of grazing in the late summer/autumn.
In the foreground the grand old lady of the group is Goose, chasing......a goose (yes it really happened!) Nutty is in the middle, and an expectant mother. Nina, who was in the park last year, brings up the rear having a good old scratch on a tree trunk.
A £5 donation to The Friends of Wanstead Parklands will be donated for every print sold.

Wonderfully characterful. I “know” Goose, Nina & Nutty, from a stint on “cow watch” in Wanstead Park, and Karen has really captured something of their nature in this print.
I genuinely can’t thank Karen enough! Less than three weeks before my wedding, I came up with the idea of giving my husband-to-be a painting of where we lived while at university. Karen replied to my enquiry incredibly quickly and was able to take on the work despite the short time frame. She was so responsive to all my messages throughout the whole process and was very flexible in terms of the composition (for example, she also painted my fiancé and I walking through the garden). The painting arrived a week before the wedding and I could not have been happier with it. It’s so beautiful and the detail in the painting is amazing - my husband cried when he received it! Thank you so much Karen :)
Thank you, I love it! Cows and Iron Maiden, simply perfect. :)
