Description

By Jane Malcolm-Davies and Ninya Mikhaila

A valuable sourcebook for costume designers, dressmakers and those involved in historical reenactments, this book contains all the information you need to create authentic clothes from the Tudor period.

Computer-generated, historically accurate patterns enable you to make a wide range of garments, such as doublets, hose, bodices, skirts, hats and headdresses - even underwear. There are also plenty of ideas for decoration and embellishment such as ruffs, cuffs, collars, embroidery and other surface decoration.

The full range of Tudor society is represented, including lower- and middle-class clothing as well as the more sumptuous costumes from the courts of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. There is also information on how to store and look after your finished clothing. In addition to the patterns, there are detailed drawings of each costume and information about historical context.

The first four chapters provide a social history of clothes in the 16th century, drawing on the latest research and primary sources such as ordinary people's wills and surviving royal records. There is discussion of the materials used, people's financial and social relationships with their clothes, and the changes in dress from birth to death. There is also general advice on choosing materials, construction methods, and an insight into the Tudor tailor's sewing kit.

Featuring:

- 160 pages
- 80 historical illustrations, many in colour
- Over 100 specially commissioned line drawings
- 36 patterns with full step-by-step instructions and photographs showing finished garments worn by real people.

We accept PayPal payments. Payment must be completed within 3 days of initial purchase. We retain the right to cancel any order at our discretion.

Returns & exchanges

Please convo us if you have problems with any of our products. We will issue a refund on unused merchandise if it is returned to us in its original condition. The one exception to this rule is our previously worn costumes. We regret that we cannot offer returns or refunds on costumes, as returns on items such as these are not very practical, particularly if shipping internationally where customs duties might be involved. Therefore, please check all measurements (both yours and those of the costume!) carefully. If you have any questions about the garments or need more information, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Shipping policies

Please allow 3 working days for orders to be processed and despatched.

In general, once your order has been despatched Royal Mail and/or ParcelForce aim for it to arrive within 3-5 working days for the UK and within 10 working days for the rest of the world - however, we can't guarantee a delivery time for international destinations since packages will have to clear Customs. If you need quicker delivery, please contact us to discuss options.

The vast majority of items in our shop are posted via Royal Mail or ParcelForce, depending upon the size and weight of the package. We use the least expensive shipping option available, which generally means that items are not trackable or insured. Please contact us if you would prefer we use a different shipping method for your order.

Previously worn costumes are also be sent via courier, are trackable, and shipping prices quoted include insurance up to the value of the costume you're buying.

International customers, please note that there may be additional taxes and duties due when your order arrives, but we have no way of estimating what these may be. You will be responsible for paying these.

Additional policies

Please note, our previously worn costumes are also very occasionally for sale in one or two other forums, such as the International Living History Fair in Bruntingthorpe, England. We endeavour to keep the shop up to date, but please understand that in very rare instances the costume you're interested in may have simultaneously been sold! In that case, we would of course contact you as soon as possible to let you know.
