Description

This etched copper cuff bracelet / bangle bearingflying ravens on a patterned swirling sky has been heat treated to create a vibrant multicoloured patina: this will deepen over time. I have developed a technique of literally 'painting' with a flame to manipulate the shape and direction of the colours. Although there is a degree of control, each piece is unique, as the colour patina cannot be replicated exactly. The beautiful anticlastic form in this version of my popular moongazing hare design is created using a hydraulic press to forge voluptuous curves into this cuff, which sits comfortably on the wrist.

In holistic medicine, copper claims to have many health benefits: 'Copper has been used to promote health in various ways since ancient times. The ancient Egyptians used it to purify water for drinking, and cultures around the world used it as a form of medicine for such afflictions as sore throat, eye infections, and skin conditions. It was also applied to wounds to prevent infection. In the modern era, copper was discovered to have anti-microbial properties which made it well suited for its ancient uses. Copper can be used on surfaces or woven into fabrics to prevent the spread of bacteria.' (please note: I do not purport to advocate or verify these claims!)

Bangle is approximately 19cm in circumference, 5cm width
colour patination and etch may vary slightly from example shown

FAQ's
What is a patina?
A patina is basically a layer of oxidisation on the surface of the metal. Patinas have varying degrees of durability, and items with patinas should not be worn permanently if you wish to retain the finish for as long as possible. This is particularly pertinent for heat coloured copper items, as the patina can be fragile, (care instructions are included with all coloured copper items). On rare occasion, certain skin types are not well suited to coloured copper, causing a reaction with the patina due to the skin's PH and resulting in an untimely 'dulling of the piece'. if you wish to own a piece with a more durable patina, I would recommend either oxidised copper or heat coloured steel, which will last many years with more frequent wear. (please note that a patina IS NOT the same as plating, so will never have the same durability as a well plated metal)

Care of jewellery
As any jeweller will tell you, jewellery should be cared for appropriately: metalwork, although durable, is not indestructible! I do not recommend jewellery to be worn whilst bathing, working out, housecleaning or other activity which may result in the item being affected or damaged by harsh chemicals or rough surfaces. This is particularly important for pieces carrying a patina.

What metals/materials do you work in?
I work predominantly in sterling silver, copper, aluminium, brass and steel, but can produce works in bronze, gold, platinum and palladium upon request.

Will copper/copper alloyed jewellery stain my skin green?
Everybody's skin type is different, so some may experience some oxidisation from copper and copper alloyed items against the skin, particularly for closely worn items (cuffs and rings for example). Many people prefer to have copper jewellery left without any barrier, as they believe it has contributing health benefits via absorption through the skin. Therefore I do not use any kind of barrier on my pieces unless requested: If you would prefer to have a barrier (lacquer) applied to the inside of the piece to prevent marking of the skin, please let me know in the notes at checkout, and I will happily do this for you for you free of charge.
